The race for mayor got tighter this week as Republican Raymond McKay failed to file the required 200 signatures of registered voters to qualify as a candidate, narrowing the field to three candidates.
Both Democratic candidates, incumbent Mayor Joseph J. Solomon and Carel Callahan Bainum, have been certified as candidates, as well as independent Frank J. Picozzi. All three garnered more than the 200 signatures to be certified as candidates. Solomon and Bainum would face off in the Sept. 8 primary with the winner appearing on the Nov. 3 ballot in a contest with Picozzi.
Also failing to qualify as a candidate is Raymond A. Regine, who declared for the House District 21 seat held by incumbent Camille Vella-Wilkinson. Regine submitted nomination papers with 24 signatures of which 22 were of registered voters from outside the district. He would have needed 50 signatures from in district voters to have qualified. This leaves Vella-Wilkinson uncontested for the seat.
Dottie McCarthy, director of the Board of Canvassers, said Monday that all other candidates declaring for local offices submitted sufficient signatures to be certified.
Dropping out before even gathering the signatures to appear on the ballot were at-large School Committee candidates Gary Costantino and Gregory Fraginis. Their withdrawal leaves incumbents Karen Bachus and David Testa poised to win new four-year terms.

The Picozzi - Solomon debate should be interesting because they both have experience with city government, and I cant wait to hear their approaches to running the city.
Dont know much about Caren or if she ever even held office, so reserving judgement.
