To the Editor,
We are proud former staffers of Congressman Jim Langevin, representing 65 years of service to the Second Congressional District. Not every Member of Congress engenders the kind of loyalty and enthusiasm that the Congressman has, and it is a testament to both his leadership as a public servant and his humor and kindness as a boss.
That is why we are surprised and so incredibly disappointed by the Congressman’s decision to turn his back on our colleague, Joy Fox, a loyal and talented former staffer, and instead endorse a wealthy, white male candidate who does not live in the Second District and until recently was “all in” on the race for Governor.
This is about the future of the district. We must put forth the strongest Democratic candidate to ensure we do not send a Republican to Congress who endorsed Donald Trump, does not support universal healthcare or childcare, and—particularly important to us in this fraught moment—supports the stripping away of women’s rights and bodily autonomy.
And that’s why we support Joy.
Joy Fox has lived in the district her entire life. She attended school here, walked the local beat of a community newspaper reporter for this very publication, and spent two decades fighting for her community as a public servant, always in the background, never seeking the spotlight, yet no less influential on important decisions that impact us all.
Those of us who know and have had the privilege of working with Joy can say candidly that her decision to run came as a surprise. Joy has never been one to seek out attention for herself. But her skills, her experiences, and her profound understanding of this district and both its strengths and challenges make her perfectly suited for this role. She isn’t in it to climb the ladder. She isn’t in it because she has the personal wealth or connections to make the path easier.
Joy is in this race to represent the needs and rights of her neighbors, and to give back to the state that she knows and loves.
And that’s why we’re with her.
Respectfully,
