Free track clinics return to Hendricken

Posted

The Bishop Hendricken track & field program will be once again hosting summer clinics throughout the month of July on campus.

Track coach Tom Harkins, along with other Hendricken coaches and alumni, will be hosting four sessions which will take place every Monday in July, beginning on the 7th at 6:30 p.m. The camp is co-ed and is offered to kids entering grades 5-8.

Each session will feature a different set of events. The event schedule is as follows:

July 7: Jumps

July 14: Throws

July 21: Sprints, Hurdles

July 28: Middle, long-distance running

Harkins and his staff introduced these clinics last summer and have already surpassed the total number of athletes enrolled. Hendricken will also have more coaches on hand and have added the javelin throw to the mix.

Harkins and his staff are excited to welcome kids to campus and to show them how much fun track and field is for high school athletes.

“We’re going to encourage kids to attend all four sessions because we’re going to give them the opportunity to try out different events, things that they may have not considered before. We’ll have fun with it. We expect good things,” said Harkins. “It’s really introductory. We’ve found that track and field is not a sport that kids aspire (to compete in) when they enter high school. We think that if we can get kids introduced to track, help them find something that they may be interested in, that’s a big plus. There’s something in track and field for every kid and we hope to convey that.”

The clinic is free of charge, but attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food item which will be donated to the St. Rita’s Food Pantry in Warwick. Enrollment is rolling and kids can sign up on the day of the clinic.
