The Warwick girls co-op hockey team fell to visiting Burrillville 8-0 last Friday night at the Thayer Arena.

The Broncos offense was aggressive from the get-go and would take an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Burrillville would go on to bury two more goals in the second and three in the third to complete the 8-0 victory.

The Broncos had similar success against Warwick in the teams’ first meeting earlier this season, taking home a 5-0 shutout.

“Burrillville is a very physical team and it shows on the ice. We just need to come out stronger against them. We picked it up as the game went on, we had a good third period, so if we can play like that for the full 45 minutes then I think we’ll have a better result. We were just overmatched,” said Warwick junior captain Ella Centracchio.

Warwick freshman goalie Mary Centracchio, Ella’s sister, shined despite the loss. Mary finished the night stopping 60 shots.

“They got a lot of shots on net which was tough, there were a lot of rebounds. Seeing the shots on net and the final score though, it made me feel confident. I thought we played well as a team though, which made me happy,” said Mary, who has been encouraged with the team in the past couple of weeks. “We have been playing better and the effort is there … skill-wise we just need to improve. I think more practice and ice time will benefit us.”

Warwick fell to 2-7 with the loss. Ella has also been happy with the team’s development this season, as it collected back to back wins against Cranston and Mount St. Charles prior to Burrillville.

“We lost a lot of girls last year and have a lot of new girls this year, we have some girls that just wanted to try hockey. I really see the effort, you see it at practice five days a week,” said Ella. “The girls are improving, especially the ones that are new to hockey, they are getting better and better.”

Warwick will have a tough test next, as it hosts first-place La Salle Academy on Friday night. The Lady Rams currently boast a 10-0 conference record this season.
