Over the years I've had lots of kinds of Thanksgiving celebrations.

I grew up with 4 siblings, so every Thanksgivings was full of fun and lots of yummy food. I remember my mom dressing us up, one by one, and sitting us in a row on the couch. We were told not to move! She’d dress my sister and me in matching outfits but different colors. We had shiny black patent leather shoes. We would put Vaseline on them to keep them shiny. My brothers had little man pants complete with a vest and bowtie! My dad would load us all into the station wagon with wood paneling on the side and away we’d go to visit my grandmother and grandfather.

My grandmother would always let me help her cook. My grandfather would show off his HO scale train set. He had erected a whole village complete with houses, stores, people and a carnival. He even made a Ferris wheel! Once I was older and married, I started hosting my own thanksgiving, complete with soup, stuffed shells, antipasto and, of course, a turkey with all the fixings. As always, we’d watch the Thanksgiving Parade and then football. Lots and lots of football! Some years we would start the day volunteering at a local soup kitchen. I felt blessed and grateful to be able to help other people less fortunate than me.

This year is filled with new and old friends. I have a woman staying with me along with her eight-year-old daughter. Her daughter is delightful, curious and polite. We’ve hung out doing different crafts. I have a granddaughter her age, so I had lots of things for her to do. My other guests include a woman from Germany. She had stayed in my short-term rental several times and a friend I’ve had for years. I also have a couple from New Jersey. We also met when they rented from me, several years ago. I feel lucky to be able to afford food during these trying times. It will be fun for all these people to meet, break bread, and have some laughs. And of course, watch some football!
