Gould, Michiko "Mitzi" (Ishikawa)

Michiko “Mitzi” (Ishikawa) Gould, 96, of Warwick, R.I., passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024. She was the beloved wife of the late John “Jack” E. Gould, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.

Born in Kamakura, Japan, she was the daughter of the late Urakichi and Haru (Kanno) Ishikawa. Following World War II, Mitzi got a job at the U.S. Naval Base Yokosuka, Japan, where she met Jack, who was stationed there. The couple married and had a son, John (wife Cheryl Burke), before leaving for the United States in 1952. They settled in Warwick, Jack’s hometown, where they had two more children, daughters Diane (Mark Thompson) and Susan (Mark Lonergan).

In addition to her children, Mitzi is survived by eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Mitzi was a trained bookkeeper who dazzled with her lightning-quick use of the abacus. She was an independent woman who enjoyed motoring around Rhode Island at the wheel of her white 1996 Ford Taurus. She skillfully knitted and crocheted anything from blankets to booties for family and friends.

But Mitzi never forgot her homeland. She savored Japanese food, as well as origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. And she will always be remembered by those who recall her bringing her disposable film cameras to every family event, determined to document the lives of those she cherished.

While there will be no funeral, the family plans a private memorial service.
