By ALEX SPONSELLER For the sixth time, the Bishop Hendricken Green and Gold Baseball Camp is going strong this summer despite the COVID-19 crisis.

With over 100 campers and an additional 40 on the program’s waiting list, members of the Hendricken staff and other Hawk alumni have been pleased with the turnout despite the circumstances.

“The response this year has been tremendous, this is probably the most widespread group that we’ve ever had geographically, they’ve been coming from all over. It has been really, really good. This may also be the best group of instructors that we’ve ever had, not just by their resumes but by the work that they’ve put in. They’ve been great,” said Chris Sheehan, who heads the program and is the school’s assistant athletic director.

Like all years, the program is dedicated to teaching young ballplayers the fundamentals of the game and getting them prepared to play at the high school level and beyond.

“We pride ourselves on being able to provide instruction on all facets of the game. We’ve done a variety of hitting drills, fielding drills, cutoffs and relays, just about everything,” said Sheehan, who feels that the COVID-19 situation has made locals even more excited to get outside and hit the field.“That is one of the reasons why the response has been so great. Yes, the reputation and success of the camp has led to the growth over the past few years, but just the need for baseball this year is something that really prompted people to want to get involved with it. The amount of people reaching out has been really impressive.”

Although this year’s program has been an adjustment, Sheehan and company have been happy to hit the diamond once again and will use some of the lessons learned this year to improve the camp moving forward.

“Each year we have guest speakers after lunch each day, which sometimes gives us limited options geographically. This year, we have been able to have guest speakers speak through Zoom, and having virtual speakers has expanded our outreach,” Sheehan said. “We had the University of Maryland pitching coach, we had Dan Gamache who played professionally and coaches at Auburn now. We also have been doing double sessions which allows us to service more kids and in the event of bad weather, we can move it inside and have more space. The instructors are also only doing one session a day, so it has helped their energy levels. There are definitely benefits from this that we have learned.”
