Greenwood parade was a treat

Stacy Capone can throw a Halloween party. She did just that Sunday afternoon and soon had the police, the Fire Department and every elected official representing Greenwood, plus some, outside her home on Champans Avenue.

Capone had expected that. After all, prior Halloween parties had attracted crowds. This year was different, however. COVID-19 put the screws to last year’s party and with trick-or-treating getting the green light, people were ready for anything that approached normalcy.

Frank and Marcia Hoffman, who have lived on Chapmans for decades, got out their lawn chairs, enjoyed the sunny afternoon and waited for the parade. As guests from toddlers to grandparents started arriving in costume, they waved and chatted with neighbors they know. Indeed, this was going to be a party.

Capone and her crew of volunteers didn’t disappoint. The street was blocked off in front of her house. Tables with pizza and hot chocolate lined one side of the street. Capone’s yard was filled with sound equipment. The music was upbeat. People danced.

And how many people were there?

Capone had an answer. She said her permit allowed for 150, so there had to be 149. Maybe that was the case at some point, but it hardly seemed possible when Capone cleared the street in front of her yard to create a stage for the Toll Gate cheerleaders and students from her dance studio.

Performances were brief. Shadows were lengthening and it would soon be time to go door-to-door for candy. Capone gave the order for the parade and to keep alive an event started more than 20 years ago. With a police cruiser in the lead and fire trucks bringing up the rear, the 2021 version of the Greenwood Halloween parade come off without a hitch. (Text and photos by John Howell)
