Hawks, Eagles on collision course

The Bishop Hendricken swim team is enjoying a big season and picked up another win last week when it cruised to a 68-26 decision over Lincoln.

Matt Walden, Nick Andrews, Aiden Curry and Tristan Jordan combined to win the 200 medley relay while Curry, Jordan, Tim and Nick Andrews won the 200 free relay. Jordan, Ryan Kornacki, Rene Lopez and Damon Buchanon won the 400 free relay.

Nick Andrews won the 200 free while Walden won the individual medley. Tim Andrews won the 50 free and 100 fly, while Nick Andrews won the 100 free. Kornacki placed first in the 500 free and Walden won the backstroke. Curry took first in the breaststroke.

Kornacki placed second in the individual medley while Ryan Voccio took second in the 500. Buchanan took second in the back while Marco Ialongo took second in the breast.

The Hawks are coming off a second place finish against Barrington at states last year and the two clubs appear to be on a collision course for another tight battle this winter. Each team is unbeaten with one tie, as they swam to a 47-47 draw when they met last Monday.

Hendricken coach Dave Hanson has been thrilled with the kids’ performance this season and has been impressed with Barrington’s returning cast as well.

“Last year we swam fantastic, Barrington just swam better. I could not have asked for anything more from our kids and this year is the same thing, we are getting everything we can out of them. Against Barrington, our medley relay team had their best time of the year but Barrington beat them. Last year at states, we set a team record in the 200 free relay, but Barrington beat us. I can’t ask for anything more from the kids,” said Hanson.

As the state meet approaches, Hanson hopes his team continues to ride the momentum and is also looking for other teams to emerge down the stretch.

“It’s a game of cat and mouse. It’s not just us against them, you need help from other schools. There was never a team that scored 362 points and didn’t win at states except for us last year. That’s how good we were, but Barrington scored 402,” said Hanson. “Moses Brown was in third with 150. You need help from other teams. We keep winning, the kids are swimming great, so we’ll see.”
