The Bishop Hendricken lacrosse team got its first crack at crosstown foe Pilgrim since the Pats moved up to Division I this season and rolled to an 11-4 victory last week.
The Hawks mounted a 7-1 lead at the halftime break, and despite Pilgrim grabbing a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Hawks would rebound with two scores of their own to fend off the threat and close the win.
Jack Treat led Hendricken with five goals and an assist while Will Kornacki added three goals and four assists. Logan Toussaint and KJ Lough also scored for the Hawks. Brett Taylor scored a pair of goals for the Pats in the loss while Marcus Walsh and Logan Fuller added one each.
Hendricken got off to a slow start in Division I this season as it dropped its first six league games. The team has found its rhythm as of late, grabbing back-to-back wins to improve to 2-6 and re-emerge in the playoff picture.
“We had a rough start to the season so we knew we just had to bounce back and get ready. We watched some film on (Pilgrim), who to guard, how to shoot quick and where to shoot on the goalie. That film helped us,” said Treat, who knew that Pilgrim would not go away easy heading into the second half. “We knew we had to boost our lead. We knew that Pilgrim came back to beat (North Kingstown). We couldn’t let that happen to us so we had to make the spread wide enough.”
Playing improved defense and cleaner offense has helped the Hawks turn things around the past two games, according to Treat.
“Our defense locked in and knew what their mistakes were. On offense we knew we needed to possess the ball. We needed to possess and put up some goals.”
Treat was also excited to see Kornacki step up against the Pats.
“Will really stepped up today and had a great game. We know each other like the back of our hands, we have great chemistry,” said Treat.
The Hawks will now take on the back half of their regular season slate, with many rematches on tap the next few weeks.
Treat and the Hawks look forward to the chance at redemption as they seek a postseason run.
“We can’t wait. (Those Division I teams) got us the first half of the season but we’re a whole new team now. We’re ready,” said Treat.
