The Bishop Hendricken baseball team has heated up in the second half of the regular season and went on to beat Pilgrim in back-to-back games last week by a combined score of 17-1.

After shutting the Pats out 8-0 on Tuesday on the back of starting pitch Corbin Berard, the Hawks would get right back to work to roll to a 9-1 victory on Thursday.

Hendricken got another big performance on the mound as starter Alex Clemmey recorded 13 strikeouts. Jack LaRose led Hendricken at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI while freshman Braeden Campbell picked up three hits and an RBI.

Colby Barker led Pilgrim with a pair of hits in the loss.

“We’ve been getting better every day. That’s what we preach to the kids, we need to improve small amounts each day and I think we’ve done that. Alex has been awesome all year, his stats are really, really good. He’s been dominant for us and we’re looking for that guy behind him. Corbin pitched well behind him on Tuesday. He has a lot of confidence in himself and that’s what we need,” said Hendricken coach Ed Holloway, who was happy to see his team get two big wins over another Division I force in the Pats. “It’ll help us a lot. The kids are playing with a lot of confidence and believe in themselves. We have a lot of seniors, so they want to finish strong and have a chance to go all the way. They’re not lacking confidence.”

Although the usual suspects have been stepping up for the Hawks, the underclassmen have begun to make an impact as well, including Campbell.

“He’s done a great job for us. He started off good with his bat and we moved him into the lineup at left field. He’s playing well in the outfield, has a strong arm. We moved him up to the leadoff spot and he is hitting the ball well. He’s been a big addition to our lineup this year,” Holloway said.

The Hawks are getting down to the wire in the regular season and are neck and neck with Cumberland for the top playoff spot. Taking it one game at a time will be the biggest key for a strong finish, according to Holloway.

“The most important game is the next game. Everything in the past is behind us. Our goal is to win the division and right now it looks like it’s between us and Cumberland. I think we’ll both finish strong, so we’re hoping to grab that top spot,” said Holloway. “We’re playing some teams that are lower in the standings, but they’re fighting for their lives. Those teams need to win games, so we just need to be ready to match their intensity.”
