The Bishop Hendricken outdoor track and field team won its 47th Class A Championship last week in Coventry. It was also its 47th consecutive title as well for the Hawks as they edged second-place La Salle.
Hendricken’s David Hayes won the 1,500 run while teammate Jack Moretta took first in the 3,000. Carson Dean took first in the pole vault, while Jakob Reyes won the high jump.
“These meets are always difficult. La Salle is a great team and we weren’t able to beat them indoors. This was a big meet and we knew we needed everything we had,” said Hendricken coach Jim Doyle.
Dean broke the state record this season and is the heavy favorite to win it all at states in two weeks.
“His goal is the go over 16 feet. He’s done that a couple times in practice so it’ll be interesting to see if he can do it. He has some opportunities to do better than he did (at the class meet). Not sure if anyone can do better than he did, he’s a great athlete,” said Doyle of Dean.
Doyle was also happy to see Moretta earn a win in the 3,000, as he has had to work his way back into the lineup after an injury.
“Jack has been a very important part of the team. He’s a captain and has been an instrumental force for us in cross country and track. He’s a team leader, he’s a tremendous leader and motivates the team. There’s no quit in John,” said Doyle.
Although the Hawks took the Class A crown, the state championship will be up for grabs as both La Salle and Barrington will be at full force and ready to make a splash. Doyle is confident in his lineup, and the Hawks are ready to get back on top after falling short to the Eagles in 2024.
“It’s going to be a very close meet. We feel that Barrington and La Salle are probably the favorites and we’re chasing them. They’re outstanding teams and have a lot of great athletes, but so do we. If we can put it together, we’ll have a great opportunity to win the state meet,” said Doyle.
