The defending champion Bishop Hendricken swim team got off to a strong start last week at McDermott Pool, topping visiting East Greenwich 68-26.
Hendricken’s team of Ryan McPherson, Casey McQuesten, Tim Andrews and Nick Andrews won the 200 medley relay, while Tim Andrews won the 200 IM. Lucas Senecal went on to take first in the 50 free, while Sean Miranda won the 100 fly.
Nick Andrews finished first in the 100 free, while Aidan Blanchette, Jon Smith, John Walden and CJ Sheldon combined to win the 200 free relay.
Alex Walsh later finished first in the 100 back, while McQuesten won the 100 breast. Walsh, Kevin Sawyer, Miranda and Aidan Briceno then finished first in the 400 free relay.
Hendricken coach Dave Hanson has been pleased with the club in the early going, and has felt that the transition to the new season has gone smoothly.
“Everything is good, the kids are working harder than ever. We’re doing well. Our upperclassmen are fantastic. Our seniors, I can’t say enough good things about them. They’re working hard and they’re motivated,” said Hanson.
The Hawks graduated a handful of their top seniors from last season, including guys like Michael Ryan, Paul Fedorenko, Matt Levesque and Max Picard. However, they still return plenty of experienced swimmers, including individual state championship winners in Sheldon and Grant Dator.
Hendricken will also boast a large freshman class as well, as they welcome nine newcomers to the pool this season.
“(The freshmen are) going to have to play a very big role. The Andrews brothers are twins, they’re both phenomenal. John Walden’s brother (Matt) is going to be really good,” said Hanson.
Overall though, Hanson will rely heavily on his upperclassmen, and expects them to have a strong season and contend for another title.
“We’ve got returning guys like Aidan, senior Kevin Sawyer, John Walden, Grant Dator. I can’t say enough about them, they’ve already bettered their best time from last year which is a great sign that we’re working hard,” said Hanson. “I’m expecting big things.
