Hawks run to 25th XC state title

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Bishop Hendricken cross country team captured its 25th state championship last weekend at Ponaganset High School.

Despite coming up short in the previous week’s Class Championships, the Hawks would get a handful of big performances to take home first.

“We weren’t surprised because we felt that a few of our guys had under performed at the class meet. We had to have our seniors step up and they did. Our game plan going in was to keep our spread as low as possible. Troy Silvestri went out and did his job, we got a big race from Wilson Jablonski. Ditto with Evan McGregor, and Keegan Tierney ran an unbelievable race also. Andrew Frezza had been dealing with some health issues but he also came through and did a great job,” said Hendricken coach Jim Doyle.

Unlike the past few years, the Hawks did not have a contender in the top three, with Silvestri finishing atop the standings in seventh. However, Hendricken would do enough damage in the top 30 to get the job done and edge rival La Salle.

“We didn’t have any guys that were going to be competing for first or second in the state, but we knew that we had a handful of guys that could finish anywhere from fifth the 15th. That is what our main focus was. Hanging in there tight and staying together as a team,” said Doyle, who was especially proud of Silvestri. “Troy is a special guy, he works very, very hard to accomplish everything he does. He’s in line to have a big year next year.”
