By ALEX SPONSELLER The Bishop Hendricken soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 match to host Moses Brown last Friday night.

Despite getting a goal in the opening minute of action and taking the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, the Hawks were unable to hold on as Moses Brown scored twice in the second half to secure the win.

Moses Brown would tie the score in the opening minute of the second half and would get the eventual game-winner with less than four minutes to play on a deflected shot.

“The winning goal, one of our guys had to get it, they absolutely had to make a save, but it got deflected in. Good things happen when you shoot. We tired a little bit, we didn’t adjust to what they did. They stepped it up a little bit in the second half and kind of caught us off guard. Once the momentum starts a shift, it’s difficult to get it back,” said Hendricken coach Mickey Rooney.

The Hawks have hit a rough patch in the middle of season and have gone winless in their past seven contests. Rooney and company hope to pick up a couple wins with just five games remaining on the schedule and are confident that they are headed in the right direction despite the results.

“We’ve got a lot of injuries, but we’re working at it and hopefully we can turn it around by the time playoffs get here. Then it’s just three games,” Rooney said. “It’s a mental thing, really. There are a few players that are starting to get concerned with how we’re doing, but I was very pleased with how we played in the first half against La Salle and then the first half here today. If you think about it, we’ve played well for 20 minutes, we’ve played well for 40 minutes, now hopefully it will be 60 minutes and more. If we keep doing that, we will win a game.”

Key pieces for the Hawks on the offensive side of the ball this fall have been Jacob Coates, Brian Garrepy and Landon Picillo. Brendan Sisson has been in net Hendricken.

The Hawks were back in action on Wednesday evening when they hit the road to face Portsmouth. The results were not available at press time. Hendricken fell to 2-5-3 on the season in the loss.
