Hawks roll past Rams

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Bishop Hendricken swim team cruised past visiting La Salle 69-25 last week at McDermott Pool.

Hendricken’s team of Matt Walden, Nick Andrews, Tim Andrews and Aiden Curry won the 200 medley relay, while Alex Walsh won the 200 free.

Nick Andrews would win the 200 IM while Tim Andrews took first in the 50 free. Tim Andrews also won the 100 fly while Nick Andrews won the 100 free. Walsh later won the 500 free for the Hawks.

Hendricken’s team of Tim and Nick Andrews, Tristan Jordan and Alex Sulyma won the 200 free relay, while Walden won the 100 backstroke. Sulyma, Walsh, Walden and Aiden Briceno won the 400 free relay.

After suffering a rare defeat in its season opener to Barrington in December, the Hawks have come back to win two straight meets to get back on track.

The Hawks will be relying on a handful of returners this year, who will all have big shoes to fill after the graduation of multiple-time state champion CJ Sheldon.

“We have had to move Nick Andrews into that role, which unfortunately takes him away from other things, because he is an absolute fabulous swimmer. He can swim anywhere and anything. Life goes on, you can’t replace a CJ Sheldon,” said Hendricken coach Dave Hanson. “(The Andrews) are both juniors now, Matt Walden and Alex Walsh are doing good, and the underclassmen are coming on.”

The Hawks’ goal moving forward is to make the most of the shortened season, which features only three more dual meets, and to be at their best come championship time.

“All you can do is be your best. They came back from that (loss to Barrington) and have been working hard,” Hanson said. “We’ve got to get better because we know that Barrington is getting better, they want to win.”

Ryan Kornacki took second in the 200 free while Curry finished second in the 50 free. Sulyma took second in the 100 free while Kornacki placed second in the 500 free.

Curry placed second in the breaststroke, while Jordan, Kornacki, Damon Buchanan and Ryan Voccio finished second in the 400 relay.

Hendricken will next take on Lincoln at McDermott Pool on Thursday afternoon.
