May 5, Defenders of Animals Annual May Breakfast, is scheduled for Sun., May 5 at the Governor Sprague Mansion, 1351 Cranston St., Cranston, at 10 a.m. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance at www.defendersofanimals.org.  All net proceeds are used for the group’s low-cost spay/neuter and animal emergency medical care for cats and dogs. May 5, The West Bay Chorale Presents Premier “Songs for the People,” composed by Elliot Z. Levine with poetry by Francis Ellen Watkins Harper, on Sun., May 5, at 7 p.m., St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Joining the chorale for this concert will be John Boutcher-collaborative accompanist, Amanda Santo-soprano, Chase Benjamin-percussion, Annie Britton-guitar and West Bay Chorale soprano Catherine White – hammered dulcimer.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and may be purchased at the door. Donations will be accepted to support the scholarship fund at New England Music Camp.

May 5, Exhibit: “Black Hands/White Objects” premiers on Sun., May 5, at Smith’s Castle, 55 Richard Smith Dr., North Kingstown. Smith’s Castle cordially invites the public to experience the debut of an This captivating exhibit will be seamlessly integrated into our historic house museum tours, offering visitors a profound glimpse into the untold stories of those who labored behind the scenes. "Black Hands/White Objects" seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the often-overlooked individuals who, as enslaved workers, meticulously handled exquisite tea sets, dinnerware, furniture, and luxurious attire within Updike household. May, 7, The East Greenwich Art Club will meet on Tues., May 7, at the United East Greenwich Methodist Church, 1558 South County Trail, from 7 to 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.  Tammy Blais, a Connecticut based artist, will give a demonstration titled, “Palette Knife Painting”. She will create a unique, happy, and whimsical oil painting, while sharing her process. Blais is a member of Wickford Art Association, Artist Cooperative Gallery in Westerly, and Essex Art Association. She is also a professional photographer. Ian Donnis will be the Guest Speaker at 7 p.m. Ian is one of the state's top political reporters and maintains a strong social media presence.

 May 11, Mother’s Day Plant Sale will be held on Sat., May 11, at The Warwick Central Baptist Church, 3270 Post Road, Warwick, from  10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the church back parking lot.  The church will be selling hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, ground cover, bushes, trees and everything from Ajuga to Zinnias. May 17, Patriotic Concert sponsored by The St. Kevin, St. Rita, and St. Timothy Music Ministries, on Fri., May 17, at 7 p.m., at St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick, to celebrate Memorial Day. This concert will feature combined church choirs, soloists, and special guest, the Ocean State Pops Orchestra. The ensemble will perform patriotic and inspirational music, some of which will be accompanied by the combined choirs. This event is a tribute to military, police, fire and first responders, and especially to active and retired veterans. The concert will open with a presentation of colors by the Warwick Police and Fire Honor Guard and the singing of the National Anthem, followed by patriotic choral music and the spectacular sound of a full orchestra and chorus. This is a free concert open to the public.

May 17,  It Takes a Village 5K and 1K Fun Run Annual Fundraiser will be hosted by The E.S. Rhodes Elementary PTA with a live music celebration on Fri., May 17, from  5 to 8 p.m. at Pawtuxet Village Park, 2 E. View Street, for an evening of food, fun, and music! This fundraiser allows support to host family events, coordinate after school enrichment programs, sponsor culturally-enhancing field trips and assembly events, and much more! Festivities kick off starting with live music from student and parents’ bands from You Rock School of Music. The 1K Fun Run & Walk will begin at 5:45 p.m. and the 5K will start at 6:15 p.m. The party will continue into the evening with food trucks and a beer tent. May 18, Breath of Hope RI 5K Run/Walk will be hosted by Warwick’s Vazquez family on May 18, at 10:30 a.m. at Goddard State Park, 1095 Ives Rd, Warwick.  Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. $35 contribution pp (Kids under 12 free).  The event is intended to raise awareness and critically needed funds for research into a rare lung disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Hemosiderosis (IPH), that affects children and has no known cure and has impacted the Vazquez family. The Vazquez family has been working closely with the University of North Carolina (Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine) on behalf of their 5-year-old son who was diagnosed eight months ago. Oct., 19, 4th  Annual No More Hunger Walk will be held on Sat., Oct. 19, to raise fund for local food pantries.  Over $30,000 has been raised in the past three years. Every Saturday, Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library, from 10 a.m. to noon.  NAMI-RI: Free Virtual Family-To-Family course on Mental Health NAMI-RI Spring Registration The Rhode Island chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness is now accepting registration for our Spring 2024 virtual Family-to-Family course. This is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program, which means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. NAMI-Rhode Island's Family-to-Family course is taught by trained family members who have lived experience with a loved one, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises. NAMI-RI Offers Family Support Groups  The RI chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) offers free support groups for families and friends of loved ones who are struggling with their mental health. The groups are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share.  The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences.
