The Lady Titans earned their first-ever victory over Pilgrim in lacrosse, drubbing the Lady Pats 10-2 on Monday during senior day at Toll Gate High School.
The Lady Titans were topped by sophomore Addie Areson, who had four goals and one assist.
Toll Gate senior and AIC commit Maddie Clark added three goals. Alina Jencks chipped in two goals while Lea Fortin (both juniors) had one goal and one assist.
“The program has been in existence now for seven years,” Toll Gate head coach James Areson explained. “It’s our first time beating them, so it’s awesome. So, we beat a city rival and its senior day.”
“The seniors, Maddie had a good game, Jill (Costello) was awesome in net, and Emma (Vollucci) did a fantastic job,” Areson added. “So, I’m really proud of them. They’ve done a tremendous job for four years and it’s nice to go out with the first win against a city rival.”
Lady Pats junior Mary Centracchio and sophomore Kiley Strain registered one goal apiece. Both tallies came in the first half.
Pilgrim battled, but this time, the Lady Titans were too much to contain.
“They’re a really good team and they got the best of us today,” Pilgrim head coach Jessica McCaughey said. “Hats off to them. Ultimately, my girls gave it their best and that’s what I care about at the end of the day. They tried as hard as they could and sometimes they don’t go our way and today was one of them.”
Costello, Toll Gate’s senior goalkeeper and captain, and Elizabeth Cavanagh, Pilgrim’s junior goalkeeper, made 14 saves each.
Cavanagh was new to the sport when she first came to the program and she has grown by leaps and bounds, according to McCaughey.
“She’s incredible,” McCaughey said. “Honestly, she showed up having never played lacrosse before, two years ago, and now, I’d say, arguably, she’s one of the best goalies in the league. I can’t say enough about Liz, she’s amazing. She’s unbelievable.”
The victory improved the Lady Titans record to 8-1 and Toll Gate just moved up to Division II this season.
“I’m pretty surprised that we’re 8-1, but we’ve had a really good year,” Coach Areson said. “We’ve played really well. I’m glad we moved up. The competition has been phenomenal and they’ve met the challenge. And the seniors have led us, so it’s just an awesome way to top off this year so far. We’ve still got two more games left and the playoffs, so we’ll see where it takes us.”
The Lady Titans play again on Thursday at Burrillville (9-1) before finishing the season at home against St. Mary Academy - Bay View (3-6-1) on Monday.
The loss dropped the Lady Pats record to 3-6. Pilgrim will host Portsmouth (10-1) on Monday, and then it will close the season with senior day at Cranston West (5-3).
