Holding out hope

On Monday, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League along with the Principals’ Committee on Athletics held a virtual meeting to discuss the latest developments on the COVID-19 crisis and its effect on the spring sports season.

The board unanimously voted to tentatively begin spring practices on May 4, with the regular season beginning on May 11 and the overall season wrapping up on June 27.

Of course, this is good news. However, this crisis has been developing on a daily basis and many experts feel that we have not even reached the peak yet.

I am generally an optimistic person when it comes to things of this nature, as I’ve said previously, I didn't even see a shut down coming at all early in March.

Overall, I am pessimistic about the prospects of a spring season. I have not given up hope, but it is hard to bank on it, which is unfortunate.

I feel for the kids, high school, middle school, youth, sports are so important to so many people. The fact that the spring season is in doubt in general is disheartening.

I can’t blame the league though, of course not, the numbers and deaths continue to rise and have not slowed down.

Let’s keep on working our way through this virus, stay safe, and do what we need to do to make sure things will be ready according to schedule should the spring season begin in a few weeks.

I’m pessimistic, but hopeful. That’s somewhat of a contradiction, but there is no reason to write off the season until the final buzzer.

I also want to take this chance to thank all of our readers.

Of course, we have dialed back on pages and have been scraping a bit for material. Thank you for sticking with us, and especially those that have reached out for story pitches, general information, and even just checking in to say hello, thank you.

That said, I also came up with an idea that I would like to pursue.

For the next few weeks, I will be open to answering reader questions regarding sports. Regardless of level, team, league, what have you, feel free to shoot me an email at alexs@rhodybeat.com.

I hope to keep hearing from you, and I hope you continue to show your support for the Beacon, Herald and Sun Rise during this time. Local journalism is so vital to our lives, so thank you so much for your continued support.

Be well, stay safe, and I’ll catch you next week.
