To the Editor:
What a pleasure it was to read about Dr. Luke Messac and his letter to Dr. Anthony Fauci in the Beacon. It was the second time in a few weeks that I had heard about this remarkable young doctor. I was first introduced to him when I heard him speak in support of Jeanine Calkin’s campaign for Senate in Warwick District 30.
Dr. Messac talked about how his patients used to be sued by his hospital because of medical debt, and how much this disturbed him. He explained how Calkin was instrumental in helping him stop this practice during her term as State Senator from 2016 to 2018. I, too, was impressed with Jeanine Calkin when she was a senator because, unlike so many of our politicians, she is not a lawyer, and she’s never been a corporate lobbyist. She has nothing to gain financially from voting a certain way, and she always seemed to vote her conscience and submit legislation that would help working families.
Two years ago, Calkin was not endorsed by her party and she lost her Senate seat, but she is running again and this time, she has the endorsement of the Democratic Party. (I am a member of the committee that endorsed her.) More importantly, she has the endorsement of people on the front lines, people who know what its like when a working family can’t pay their medical bills, people like Dr. Messac. In his video endorsement, Dr. Messac said he supports Jeanine because “I’ve learned … to trust the people actually doing the work.” Jeanine is one of those people who doesn’t just say what you want to hear, she actually does the hard work. You can find the entire video at Jeanine Calkin for RI on Facebook.
