Increasingly, Rhode Islanders ride the rails

With train ridership up around the nation, it appears Warwick is no exception to that trend over the course of the last year.

In 2024, the T.F. Green train station saw 347 daily passengers, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation spokesman Charles St. Martin. There is no weekend service at the station.

Those numbers, however, make up only 6% of the state’s total ridership numbers.

Statewide, train ridership has seen a significant increase in recent years. According to RIDOT data, the average number of MBTA trips at Pawtucket-Central Falls, Providence, T.F. Green and Wickford stations combined has increased steadily from a pandemic-era low 1,092 trips per day in 2021, shortly following the pandemic and before the opening of the Pawtucket-Central Falls station, to 5,801 as of September, which exceeds the pre-pandemic high of 4,964 trips. A trip represents each passenger on a train.

RIDOT has attributed much of that growth to the Pawtucket-Central Falls station, which the department says has seen greater ridership numbers than anticipated since it opened in 2023.

The agency is also looking at a proposal to upgrade the station to receive Amtrak trains as well; currently, the T.F. Green station can serve only MBTA trains. In order for that to occur, the station would need to add a second platform, electrify the tracks and upgrade the platform at the station. The estimated total cost of the project is $240 million, RIDOT says.

The department approved a preliminary design for the project in 2023, sending it off to Amtrak for its approval. Amtrak last spoke about the project in April 2024, when spokeswoman Jen Flanagan said the agency was still looking at the design.

If the project is approved by Amtrak, it would then need approval by the Federal Rail Administration before any work on the project could begin.
