Joanne M. (Lial) Smith, age 71, of Warwick, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of George R. Smith, Jr. They were married for 52 years.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Joseph and Hermina (Pacheco) Lial, she lived in Warwick since 1969. Mrs. Smith was employed as a library aide at the Warwick Public Library for 33 years, retiring in 2012. The day of Joanne’s retirement was proclaimed “Joanne M. Smith Day” in the city of Warwick by Mayor Scott Avedesian.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, George R. Smith, III of Warwick; two daughters, Kelly M. French of Warwick and Jennifer L. Smith of Point Pleasant, NJ; a sister, Shirley Coppolino of Maine; and five grandchildren, Julia French, Hannah French, Jared Smith, Lucas Smith, and Owen Hart. She was the sister of the late Wayne J. Lial.
Her funeral was held on Tuesday, September 28, from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Timothy Church, 1799 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. Burial was in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.
