Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) is seeking submissions for his annual Rhode Island Second Congressional District High School Art Competition. High school students residing in the Second District are eligible to enter the competition and could win the honor of having their work displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. 

“Rhode Island has a wealth of young talented artists, and their artwork deserves to be recognized on the national stage,” said Langevin, who first started hosting the annual competition in 2001. “I’m pleased that my office can once again hold this competition to showcase some of our brightest stars, encourage creativity, and promote artistic expression. I look forwarding to seeing the wonderful pieces that are submitted from across the district.” 

Students interested in participating in the competition may submit one piece of art, which can fall into any of the following seven categories: painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer-generated art, and photography. Artwork may be up to 26 inches high by 26 inches wide, and up to four inches deep including a frame, and must be original in concept, design and execution. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s competition was canceled. Due to this, participants will be able to submit artwork from the 2019-20 school year as well as the current school year. 

Entries will be showcased on Congressman Langevin’s Facebook and Flickr starting Monday, April 19, 2021, and a virtual awards ceremony for all participating students, their families, teachers, and school officials will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at 6 p.m. on Zoom.  

A panel of judges will be assembled to judge the entries and determine the winning artwork.  The winner and runners-up will be announced at the ceremony. In addition to being displayed in the U.S. Capitol, the first-place winner will also have his or her artwork featured on Congressman Langevin’s official website. Second and third place winners will have their artwork displayed in the Congressman’s District Office for one year.  

Entries must be submitted by April 16, 2021, at 4 p.m. Artwork will be accepted Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., at the Congressman’s District Office at 300 Centerville Road, Suite 200 South, Warwick.
