Summer Stage at Bishop Hendricken makes its return after a year off due to COVID-19 with this weekend's production of Disney's Newsies. The hit Broadway musical based on the 1992 Disney film starring Christian Bale plays August 5-8, 2021 at the Dr. Daniel S. Harrop Theater on the campus of Bishop Hendricken High School.

Newsies features a 5-show engagement with performances on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7pm; and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Thursday evening's opening performance is sold out. Tickets are $12 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults. Tickets are available for purchase online at bhhsri.booktix.com. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the Box Office at (401) 889-5421. The Box Office will be open for in-person ticket sales one hour prior to each performance.

"To say that we're excited to be back is an understatement," said Richard Sylvia, Dean of Campus Life and Director of Arts. "Throughout this process, our students have been consummate professionals in keeping safe and staying dedicated to their work on stage and behind the scenes. Our creative team is immensely proud of them, and audiences are going to fall in love with this show."

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for their place at the table. The music, written by Broadway icon Alan Menken, features hits such as "Carring the Banner," "Santa Fe," "The World Will Know," "Seize the Day," and "King of New York."

The production features more than 70 student actors, technicians, and musicians from around Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Participating students attend various Catholic, public, and private schools and span grade 9 through incoming college students. The effort is spearheaded by a creative team of Hendricken faculty and program alumni.
