Tyler Gates was home preparing for his first day at new job when he heard a vehicle idling outside. When he looked out the window, he saw a family in their truck filming something above his house.

“Over the past month, I’d caught glimpses of this eagle family flying around my street and the Apponaug area,” Gates shared in an email to the Beacon. “So, I had a hunch about what they were watching. Sure enough, there was an adult Bald eagle perched in a tree in my backyard.”

He quickly grabbed his cell phone and started snapping away.

Gates believes that there are three Bald eagles in the area, two adults and a juvenile. He also thinks the family of eagles may be nesting near Gorton’s Pond in Apponaug or possibly down by Apponaug Cove.

“It’s been incredible seeing these majestic birds, and I hope to catch more glimpses of them in the future,” he wrote.
