Making Strides for Breast Cancer

For 26 years the DeNuccio family has done the Making Strides for Breast Cancer walk at all its changing locations. Out of an abundance of caution they are doing a neighborhood walk as they did last year Sunday, Oct. 17. All walkers are welcome. They are asked to meet at 8:30 a.m. at 7 Lakecrest Drive. The walk starts at 8:45 to walk to Edgehill, Betsey Williams,Yucatan and Coin before returning for coffee. Walkers are urged to wear pink.

 

Pumpkin patch open

St. Mark’s Church Annual Pumpkin Patch on West Shore Road is now open through Oct. 31. Hours are Saturday and Sundays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekdays the patch is open from 12-6 p.m. and closed on Thursdays. Stop by to get your pumpkins, take pictures, and support the ministries of St. Mark’s. 10 percent of proceeds will be donated to the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center.

 

Craft and vendor on Sunday

A craft and vendor show featuring wood designs, gourmet chocolates, home décor, quilted wall hangings, jewelry and more will be held Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company & Museum, 45 Kernick St. Eighteen vendors are expected to be there according to organizer Sandy Popp.

 

Oakland Beach Association meets Oct. 14

The Oakland Beach Association will meet today, Thursday, Oct. 14, 6 pm, at the Boys & Girls Club, 340 Oakland Beach Ave., side entrance. Our guest will be the new Warwick planning director, Tom Kravitz. Refreshments will be served. All Oakland Beach residents are welcome.

 

Drive-thru food pantry

Spring Green Memorial Church, 1350 Warwick Ave., will hold its monthly Drive-Thru Food Pantry Saturday, Oct. 16 starting at 11 a.m. in the parking lot behind the church. Grocery bags of food will be distributed as long as they last. Questions should be directed to the church office at 463-8328.

 

Pumpkin spooktacular

The Conimicut village Pumpkin Spooktacluar is back this year. The event, Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Donovan Park in the village center, features home carved pumpkins. Open to all ages, people are asked to drop off their works of art from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 23. They can pick them back up at Friends Way at 8 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian, Conimicut Village Association, Morris Farm, Riverview Association, Sunbelt Rentals and Friends Way.

 

No More Hunger Community Walk

A walk to call attention to food insecurity and raise funds for local pantries and the West Bay Marketplace will be held on Saturday, October 16th. Registration begins at 9:00am at St Mark’s Episcopal Church 111 West Shore Road, Warwick. Several local groups and churches will be participating. Talk on indigenous tribes

On Monday, Oct. 18 Loren Spears will talk about the history, culture and the arts of indigenous tribes of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts. Her program will include a display of cultural objects and encompass a traditional story and Native music. This free Zoom program is sponsored by the East Greenwich Historic Preservation Society and begins at 7:30 p.m. Loren is the Executive Director of the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter, an educator, author, activist and indigenous artist, with a passion for teaching Native history. Norwood Scarecrow Light Pole Contest

Let’s have fun and scare up some fall spirit by decorating our light poles in the beautiful Norwood neighborhood. Show us your creativity, pride and holiday traditions using materials from home and craft supplies to create a unique scarecrow on your designated pole. This event will take place on Oct.16th. For a small $5 donation you will be given an assigned light pole near your home to decorate. Your creations will be judged and prizes will be awarded for the top three contestants. Winners will be announced at the Neighborhood Fall Festival on October 23rd at the Norwood field behind the Boys and Girls Club. Norwood Neighborhood Fall Festival

Enjoy hot cider, crafts, music and more on Oct. 23rd from 1 - 4 p.m., at the Norwood Field behind the Boys and Girls Club at 42 Frederick St. in Warwick. Come delight in Norwood Neighborhood Association’s fall celebration, where the winners of the Oct. 16th Scarecrow Decorating Contest will be announced with prizes awarded to the top three entries. Thundermist breaking ground for dental building

Thundermist Health Center leaders, board members, state officials, and supporters will break ground on the new Thundermist of West Warwick dental building at 5 Washington Street Monday, Oct. 18 at 8:30 a.m. The

ceremony will mark the beginning of construction of the $8.6 million project to serve an additional 3,500 dental patients, implement modern design features to improve the patient experience, and help to revitalize Arctic Village.

 

Notable Works live performance is Saturday

Notable Works Publication and Distribution Co., Inc. will host a live performance on Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m. at the North Providence Union Free Library, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence, featuring some of the poets included in two of Notable Works’ recent publications: Voices of the Earth: The Future of Our Planet II and Love Warms the Homeless Heart II. The performing poets will include: Elizabeth Bogutt, Emily Cooper, David Dragone, Noreen Inglesi, Thomas Lane, Singer/Songwriter Jan Luby and Patricia McAlpine. Also featured will be the Notable Works’ Ensemble under the direction of Notable Works’ Artist in Residence, composer and poet, Noreen Inglesi along with Tina Bernard, vocals; Maria Bilyeu, cello; Anne Diamond, flute; Antonio Rodrigues, tenor and Alison Shea, piano. There will also be a special presentation by Alicia Lehrer, Executive Director of Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council, about some of WRWC’s current projects, programs and events. Wednesday yoga at library

Fine tune your yoga practice or give yoga a try with a Gentle Yoga class at Warwick Public Library on Wednesdays, October 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 7 p.m. Yoga instructor Linda Morse will guide you through essential postures and show you how to breathe. Improve flexibility, build strength, and feel refreshed and renewed. No yoga experience is necessary. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat. 18th Howlween Party

Join us for a wicked good time at our 18th annual Howlween Party on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Tickets cost $20 per person (or zombie!) and include dinner. There will be a cash bar. Enjoy dancing with music provided by a DJ, raffles and costume contest prizes. Costumes are optional, but definitely lots more fun. This is an adults-only event, and no pets are permitted on the premises. There is an ATM on premises. Hosted by the Warwick Animal Shelter, proceeds will benefit our shelter animals. Meals on Wheels in need of volunteers

Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe, and happy at home. AARP field trips

From Sunday, November 7 to Tuesday, November 9, AARP is hosting a trip to Atlantic City. On the 7th, attendees will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the I-95 Park & Ride at Exit 6A, Coventry and travel to Atlantic City’s first casino, Resorts. Upon arrival, guests will receive $20 casino slot cash, $50 in food credits, and a casino show. The bus will return to RI around 7:30 p.m. on the 9th. The tour cost is $269 per person for a double room, $259 per person for a triple room, and $369 per person for a single room. ESL classes at WPL

The Warwick Public Library and the RI Family Literacy Initiative host English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting on September 20. Practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in small groups. Classes are free and meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. For more information, call (401) 455-8041.

 

Citizenship prep classes at WPL

Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library. Practice citizenship vocabulary, learn the necessary civics content, and work on interview skills using the N-400 application form. Bee-ginner’s Beekeeping

Looking for a new hobby this fall? Learn how you can start, maintain, and care for a honeybee colony by taking this online course. Whether you are brand new to beekeeping or have a few years of apiary experience, you’ll gain valuable insights to further your beekeeping hobby or business with this expert-led class. Bee-ginner’s Beekeeping: The Basics of Apiculture will run from Nov. 1-15. The self-paced course takes approximately 14 hours to move through, and participants will have 2 weeks to complete the work at their own pace. Weekly car show at Tri-City Elks Lodge #14

The Tri-City Elks Lodge at 1915 West Shore Road invites you to the weekly car show, held every Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Bring your auto and show it off, or just come and enjoy. Motorcycles are welcome. Music and food will be available, as will the Tiki Bar serving cold beverages. Entrance is free.

We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Avenue in Cranston. We Make RI offers job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help, and more. The RI chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness provides free family support groups and educational programs. These resources exist because friends and family members like you are passionate about sharing what they’ve learned and determined to pay it forward. The value of your voice, shared experience, and leadership is truly priceless to those who are struggling. Please consider reaching out and helping to create healthy, supportive communities across Rhode Island where good mental health for all can be our shared reality. NAMI Family-to-Family is a free 8-session educational program for families, significant others, and friends of people living with mental illness. It is a designated evidenced- based program. NAMI-trained family members lead the course with presentations, discussions, and interactive exercises.
