Mayor Frank Picozzi wants to see the Conimicut Village community police substation reopen and he believes that can happen reasonably soon.
Picozzi along with Warwick Building official Alfred DeCorte and others visited the substation that has been closed for more than a month last week to assess condition of the cinder block building on West Shore Road near the intersection of Beach Avenue. Picozzi said Tuesday the overall condition of the structure appears sound, but the floor is buckling. He said the floor needs to be ripped up to determine the condition of the substructure. He thinks it’s a job that can be completed by municipal employees and won’t require the advertising of bids and award of an outside contract, which would prolong the reopening of the substation.
The substation is currently operating out of the Police Athletic League, PAL, offices on Bend Street.
The mayor said he would like to see the substation back in the village and accessible and visible to the community.
Ginny Barham, President of the Conimicut Village Association, enthusiastically welcomed the news. She is hopeful in its assessment and work to the building that the city addresses any issues in addition to the floor to ensure indefinite operation of the substation.
