New Harvest Coffee Roasters presents 'Los Portillos,' a documentary film premiere

Posted

New Harvest Coffee Roasters will host a premiere party for their short documentary film “Los Portillos”, on Friday, Nov. 15, at their café and roastery in the Farm Fresh Building on 10 Sims Ave., Providence, from 6-9 p.m. Hors d’ouevres and drinks will be served, including pourovers and specialty cocktails made with coffee from Los Portillos.

The film was created in partnership with Rhode Island-based photography/videography studio Apparition, and tells the story of Honduran coffee farmer Adolfo Reyes and the evolution of his coffee farm, Los Portillos, which was the first individual farm New Harvest began working with in 2009.

“Building relationships with small farms is the hallmark of what we do at New Harvest, and over the past 15 years, we have grown alongside Los Portillos,” said Rik Kleinfeldt, co-owner and co-founder of New Harvest Coffee Roasters. “We work with Adolfo on what is known as a ‘micro-lot’ model, and we source coffee directly from his farm. This helps ensure that we receive high quality coffee that he and his team are paid fairly for. In turn, Adolfo has stability and can plan for the long-term future of his farm.”

“The opportunity to travel to Honduras with Rik and the New Harvest team was a dream realized,” said Kate Foster of Apparition. "To experience first-hand the authentic relationship between New Harvest and the farmers they partner with shaped our view of coffee culture and helped set the tone of the film.”

Screenings will begin at 6 p.m., and will be held every half hour, on the half hour, with the last screening at 8:30 p.m.  A question- and-answer session with Rik Kleinfeldt and New Harvest Coffee’s Director of Education & Outreach, Britta Gustafson, and filmmakers Kate Foster and John Hesselbarth of Apparition will take place immediately following the 7 p.m. screening. The film’s running time is just under seven minutes and the screening is free and open to all.
