New neighbors display Chistmas spirit in Conimicut

The holidays may feel different this year, but the Conimicut Village Association is bringing together the community with a little Christmas magic.

One of the beloved events of Conimicut Village is the tree lighting, according to Ginny Barham, the president of CVA. In previous years, it’s been a time to gather with neighbors, carol through the streets, enjoy food from local restaurants, and celebrate as a community.

Due to the pandemic, the association had to make some creative choices when it came to an alternative. The Decorate a Pole Contest was debuted on Facebook in November, and since then, 12 residents have decorated historic light poles throughout the village. The new neighbors include familiar winter figures like snowmen and carolers, as well as Flick, the Christmas Story character famous for getting his tongue stuck to a frozen pole. The entries will be judged on the Conimicut Village Facebook page later this month, with prizes for first, second, and third place. “It’s a family event,” says CVA Vice President Leslie Derrig. “This is a creative way of getting the family out and everyone else can see what they’re doing.” Light poles are still available to decorate, and Derrig encourages more participants. To decorate a pole, email lesderr08@gmail.com.

The association has ramped up decorations, covering the village in lights and wreaths. “We just want to bring as much holiday cheer as possible,” said CVA member Lisa Markovich. “We want people to be happy when driving through our village. We care about everyone, and making it more spectacular with decorations and lighting, it just brings our community together a little bit more.”

One new addition to the holiday décor is a large pair of angel wings in Donovan Park, built by local woodworker, Mauricio Moreira. People are encouraged to stop by the park to take a photo with the wings, which will be up until the end of December.

On Friday, Dec. 4, the CVA hosts a virtual lighting of the tree in Donovan Park, featuring music and holiday tunes.

“We want to give people a little holiday spirit, amidst everything that’s going on,” says Barham. Residents and visitors are welcome to view the tree and holiday lights throughout the village; social distancing and masks required. To view the tree lighting, visit the Conimicut Village Facebook page.
