New site processed 2,000 COVID rapid tests in first week

In the three weeks since the rapid COVID-19 asymptomatic testing site opened at the shops at Greenwood, 4,227 tests have been administered, with 2,000 tests processed within the first week of operation.

The testing center is located in Suites 15 and 17, near the Rhode Island Blood Center on Greenwich Avenue and have been provided by property owner, The Carpionato Group, at no cost to the state.

An appointment is not required for the self-administered test, and results are provided within 15 minutes. The Rhode Island National Guard is operating the center.

Sgt. First Class Brian Wheeler from the National Guard is overseeing operations, and a staff of about 18 soldiers and personnel.

“From what I’ve seen, it’s been a fairly successful site so far,” Wheeler said in an interview. “It’s hitting the intentions of what we wanted to do.”

Wheeler explained that it’s important to have “a steady flow of residents” visiting the site. “You don’t want to have soldiers there just sitting around. These sites are easy to access, and widely publicized.”

The site is open to all Rhode Islanders, but only to people without symptoms. Those with symptoms should be isolating and getting a PCR, polymerase chain reaction, test.

Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the test is free.

“The new testing site will help get more Rhode Islanders tested, and hopefully get case numbers down across the state. It was made possible through a private partnership with the Rhode Island National Guard, the city of Warwick, and a private business,” said Mayor Frank Picozzi.
