Night at the Theatre

After a two year hiatus, Thrive Behavioral Health is back with its annual fundraiser “A Night at the Theatre.” They are raising funds to deliver their mission of inspiring hope and empowering lives of people living with mental health, substance use and housing issues. A reception will be followed by The Gamm’s premiere performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The event will take place at 6 p.m. on May 4 at the Gamm Theatre at 1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick. Tickets are $75 and include the reception and theatre performance. There are only 50 tickets, so order soon.

Gorton Pond Cleanup

The Friends of Gorton Pond will have their first clean up of the season on April 24 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. followed by a free community event at the beach.

 

Pollinator Pathways

The Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission will hold a presentation on Pollinator Pathways at 7p.m. on April 20 at the Warwick Public Library.

 

Comedy Fundraiser

There will be a comedy fundraiser featuring top local comedians to benefit Greenwood Fire Company Museum on May 14 at the Warwick Firefighters Association 120, (750 Warwick Avenue, Warwick).  Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. BYOS (Bring Your own Snacks), cash bar, raffles, 50/50 drawing, auctions. 18+ event. FOWPS Meeting

Just a reminder of “Friends of Warwick Ponds” meeting on April 18, at 6 p.m. at the Warwick Library Sandy Lane. This meeting will be on Facebook. Dr. Shivers and his team will be presenting their preliminary results of a multiyear study of Warwick Pond.

 

Tree Planting

There will be an Arbor Day tree planting at 1:05 p.m. on April 29 at Warwick Neck Elementary School; hosted by the Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission.

 

Craft Fair

The 8th annual Crafting for Critters Spring Craft Fair will be held outdoors on May 7 at the Airport Professional Park, 2348 Post Road, Warwick, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Hosted by Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, over 60 artisans will be selling their locally handcrafted wares just in time for Mother’s Day! Products for sale include fine art, jewelry, crafts, handcrafted accessories, apparel, home decor, baked goods, candies, jams & jellies, dog treats, pet accessories, books and much more.

Electronics Recycled

Join The Warwick Neck Improvement Association on April 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at Kevin's Warwick Neck Garage to recycle those electronics you no longer use. It's easy to do. The staff from Indie Cycle, LLC, will help unload the computer, laptop, microwave and more that are cluttering your home.

 

Reptile Adventure

Join the Pontiac Free Library on Monday, April 18 at 2 p.m. for Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure! This is an exciting interactive program that both entertains and educates people of all ages about the mysterious world of reptiles and amphibians. Drive-Thru Food Pantry

Spring Green Memorial Church will be holding our monthly Drive-Thru Food Pantry on April 16. Grocery bags of food will be distributed at 11 a.m. in the parking lot in the back of the church. Oakland Beach Association Meets Today

A meeting of the Oakland Beach Association will be held April 14, 6 p.m., at the Oakland Beach Boys & Girls Club, 340 Oakland Beach Ave. Our guest speaker will be Bill Facente of Warwick's Community Development Office. This is your opportunity to hear updates about the masterplan projects underway at the front beach and Brushneck Cove. All neighborhood residents are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

 

Cemetery Cleanup

The Warwick Commission on historical cemeteries will host a clean up of Brayton cemetery in Apponaug on April 23 from 9 a.m. through 11:30 a.m. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Please bring a rake if you have one. Community service hours will be provided for anyone needing them. This is our annual clean up and is part of the RI cemetery awareness and preservation month. Please join us.

 

“City Hall Plaza” Presentation

The Norwood Association invites you to attend their May 4 meeting at 7 p.m. at the Norwood Boys & Girls Club, at 43 Frederick St, in Norwood. Mayor Frank Picozzi, will present an interesting review of the exciting plan the city has to create a family-friendly park with an adjacent ice skating rink and other enjoyable amenities such as walking trails and other community-friendly events. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

 

Oakland Beach Easter Egg Hunt April 16

The 33rd annual Oakland Beach Easter Egg Hunt for ages 9 and under will be held April 16 at the Oakland Beach Elementary School playground. The hunt will kick off at noon sharp, and will be held rain or shine.

Children should bring a basket or bag to hold their eggs. They will also receive goody bags and have a chance to win prizes. A variety of items and gift certificates will be raffled at the event, and there will be free hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks for all.

 

Conimucut Egg Hunt

There will be an Easter egg hunt on April 16 at 11 a.m. at Clegg Field (Winter Ave. off West Shore Road in Conimicut Village). Do not be late, we start exactly at 11 a.m. and all eggs are collected in 10 minutes. Prizes in some of the eggs and everyone gets a goody bag from the Easter Bunny. Bring your own Easter basket to collect the eggs. This event is sponsored by the volunteers of the Conimicut Village Association. www.conimicut.org. No Rain Date.

Asbury United Methodist Church in Warwick is celebrating the Lenten season with upcoming services (nursery available). Yard Sale at Asbury UMC

 Asbury UMC at 550 Fair Street in Warwick is hosting a fundraiser/community outreach the yard sale on May 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  We have large and small ticket items. Indoor and outdoor tables hosted by Asbury members and the neighborhood. And, we wouldn't be Methodist if we didn't also have some food, so come a little hungry.

 

Monthly Grab & Go Meals

Food for the Soul is a food provision mission for those in need of a meal. Asbury UMC has partnered with Lakewood Baptist Church in Warwick to provide "grab and go" meals once a month. Pick up dates are April 16, May 21 and June 18 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Lakewood Baptist Church 255 Atlantic Avenue, right on a bus line. Come as you are, leave feeling loved and cared about.

 

The Art of the Fan

Clouds Hill House Museum presents “The Art of the Fan” which will run through May 15. Dozens of fans belonging to past generations will be on display. Fixed, cockade, fontage, brisé and pleated fans of lace, paper, cloth and feathers will be included with interesting and fun facts about fans. Reservations are required and regular admission rates apply.

 

West Warwick AARP Chapter

West Warwick AARP Chapter is looking to expand its membership. Meetings are held at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month at St. Mary's Church Hall, 70 Church Street, West Warwick. All are welcome to come enjoy a cup of coffee and chat with new friends.

 

AARP Chapter 2210 Lobster Clambake and Foxwoods Trip

AARP Chapter 2210 has planned a Clambake at Captain Jack's and Foxwoods Casino trip for May 26. Bus pickup from the Exit 6A Park & Ride at 10:30 a.m., return time is approximately 5:30 p.m. Cost is $99 per person (must be paid before May 12). For more information, call Maureen at 828-5188. Welcoming Ashley Kalus

The Warwick Republican City Committee will welcome Republican Candidate for Governor, Ashley Kalus to their April 21 meeting. May Breakfast

St. Mark's Episcopal Church will hold its May Breakfast on May 1 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., at 111 West Shore Rd., Warwick. Menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, baked beans, pancakes, muffins and hot and cold beverages. Cost for adults is $10, children (5-12) are $5. Handicap accessible. Earth Day Event Series

The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is kicking off Earth Day with clean days and fun activities all month long! April 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clean Day and Tree Planting at Adams Lane in North Providence; April 20, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clean Day at Cricket Field in Johnston; April  22, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Earth Day Clean Day and Tree Planting at Promenade and Kinsley in Providence; April 22, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Earth Day Clean Day at Riverside Park in Providence. Kids Fishing Derby

The Tri-City Elks Lodge #14 will host a kids fishing derby on April 16 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Children ages five to 12 can participate in the event. There will be two age groups: one for ages five to eight and another for ages nine through 12. All you need is your own fishing rod and bait, and a fishing pole will be awarded to the once child in each group who catches the largest fish. Awards will be handed out at 11 a.m. and hot dogs, chips and soda will follow. Stop by the lodge (1915 W. Shore Road) to sign your children up!

 

April Art Camp

Save the date for five full days of art camp at Warwick Center for the Arts where we will celebrate Earth Day all around the globe! Daily themes will include art projects from the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, Japan and more. All art materials included. This camp is for kids in grades one through six.

Camp will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Warwick Center for the Arts, 3259 Post Rd., Warwick, from April 18 to April 22. The cost is for the five-day camp is $300 for non-WCFA members and $275 for WCFA members. For further information: www.warwickcfa.org or 401-737-0010.

 

Chamber Orchestra Concert

The Chamber Orchestra of Barrington at St. John’s, led by Music Director Edward Markward, will present the fourth concert of its fifth season on April 24, at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington.

The concert will include Prokofiev’s, Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Sibelius’, Valse triste op. 44, No. 1 (Sad Waltz, Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in C Major for Cello and Orchestra, Hob. VIIb:1.

All audience members will be required to wear masks and show proof of being fully vaccinated including a booster shot, if eligible. The concert is free, donations are welcome. More information at www.cobsj.org.

 

Annual Electrofishing Survey

Join the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council on Saturday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lower Woonasquatucket at River Sun Mills, 166 Valley St. Providence. Each year, they record what fish are migrating into our rivers as a way of assessing the health of our river habitat. Volunteers can choose to join the “on land” or “in water” crew to participate in a hands-on habitat assessment. Homecoming Celebration

St. Francis Xavier Academy Alumnae Association (SXA) announced its Homecoming celebration will be October 23, 2022, with an 11 a.m. mass at St. Timothy Church, Warwick, followed immediately by lunch at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Hearts for Hospice

Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice (VNH&H) is asking for individuals to support their hospice programs by giving $20 or more to their Hearts for Hospice campaign. Cranston East 50th Reunion

Cranston East’s 50th year Reunion Committee will hold its 50th reunion on June 25 at 6 p.m. at the Bonnet Shores Beach Club; DJ Luke Renchan will provide the entertainment. Calling All Cribbage Players

Do you play cribbage? Consider Donating Blood

The Rhode Island Blood Center is in need of blood. Individuals wishing to donate must book an appointment at the donation center; walk-ins are only accepted if safe distancing allows at the person’s time of arrival. Wiley Center Coat Drive

This winter, the George Wiley Center is collecting donations for a coat drive to help keep people warm this season amidst the housing crisis.

We are collecting new and gently used clean coats, as well as boots, shoes, blankets, mittens, hats and hand warmers. With the threat of eviction and utility shutoffs, and the financial burden of the pandemic, many Rhode Islanders are in need of basic winter necessities to keep warm. Together, we can work toward solutions to the housing crisis. You can drop off donations to our office at 32 East Ave. in Pawtucket, on Wednesday afternoons and evenings every week! As always, you are invited to our weekly meetings on Wednesdays at 6:30, where you can take action for housing and utility justice, apply for rental and utility relief, meet members of your community and enjoy pizza.

 

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island

 BBBSRI has opened a new Donation Drop-Off Center at 993 Oaklawn Ave., in Cranston. BBBSRI’s main headquarters has been located on Pontiac Avenue for 12 years. With its headquarters moved from Providence this November, BBBSRI had to find a new location for its Cranston drop off center.

 

 

Walk and Talk at Rocky Point

 Come join the “Rocky Point Pacers” for a walk around Rocky Point every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m., weather permitting. They meet at the gate on Rocky Point Avenue. Get some sunshine and burn off some holiday pounds.

 

 

Be Kind RI

Be Kind RI is a new program that connects volunteers to their neighbors across RI through text alerts to coordinate food deliveries from grocery stores and food pantries. To sign up go to www.BeKindRI.org. Volunteers must be 18 or older and undergo our background check. Be Kind RI is open to those in RI experiencing COVID-19 risk factors including seniors 65+, anyone with underlying health conditions, those in quarantine or isolation, anyone experiencing a lack of childcare, and those who would otherwise experience difficulty in obtaining food. Meals on Wheels in Need of Volunteers

Meals on Wheels of RI is in immediate need of volunteers for its Home-Delivered Meal Program in Warwick. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The program helps homebound seniors remain healthy, safe and happy at home. ESL classes at WPL

The Warwick Public Library and the RI Family Literacy Initiative host English as a Second Language (ESL) classes starting on Sept. 20. Practice your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in small groups. Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL

Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library. Practice citizenship vocabulary, learn the necessary civics content, and work on interview skills using the N-400 application form. Get a Job Thursdays

We Make RI, an organization that provides free manufacturing training, is hosting a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at their offices at 200 First Ave. in Cranston. We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more. Some employers include Swissline Precision, Admiral Packaging, KB Surfaces, Warwick Hanger and Hitachi Cable. Prepare RI High School Internships Program

Calling all RI public high school juniors: The 2022 PrepareRI High school Internship Program is accepting applications to participate in on-site/in-person, paid summer experiential learning internships with local employers across the state. This program will help you earn, learn and connect with employers across Rhode Island. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The 2022-23 RI Pre-K Lottery Email Notification Sign-Up form is now available. Please note that this is not the RI Pre-K Lottery application. This form will sign you up to stay informed of the lottery opening in late spring. You will only need to complete and submit this form once. You can access the RI Pre-K Lottery Email Notification Sign-Up in three locations: 1. By visiting http://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSdn.../viewform to go directly to the Google Form; 2. By visiting the RIDE homepage and clicking the round “Pre-K Lottery Email Notification Sign Up” badge on the right toolbar and 3. Arts Scholarships for Youth

Do you know a student aged 11 – 14 who loves to create and to perform? Encourage them to apply to our ARTS Scholarships 2022 program! Applications and guidelines are now available at ppacri.org/artsscholarships. The ARTS Scholarships 2022 program, sponsored by the Textron Charitable Trust and the PPAC Annual Fund with support from WPRI 12 and Ocean State Charities Trust, offers young artists an opportunity to participate in local summer arts education program that will broaden their experience in their chosen area of study. Qualified students must be aged 11 – 14 by June 1 of this year and reside in and attend school in Rhode Island.
