After being canceled last year because of the pandemic, organizers of this year’s Warwick National Night Out didn’t know what to expect. Might there be a larger crowd than usual or could people still be concerned about Covid, recalls Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis. Held Tuesday at Oakland Beach Commons, the event aimed at fostering good relations between law enforcement and the community drew an estimated 1,500 people. “It was a family event,” Travis said Wednesday. She called the weather “perfect” and was delighted by the numbers of participating agencies providing information to the public including the Warwick Library, Warwick Sewer Authority and the Warwick Boys and Girls Clubs. Highlights of the evening included demonstrations by the Warwick Police K-9 team and Warwick Firefighters (seen here) using the Jaws of Life to cut up a vehicle. Mayor Frank Picozzi, pictured talking with US Air Force recruiter Sean Preece – his son Maxwell is on his shoulders – found the event enjoyable and informative. Fireworks capped the night.
