Mary Lou (Alsfeld) O’Neill, 89, of Warwick, died Wednesday, January 8, 2025. She was the wife of the late Joseph J. O’Neill. They were married for 56 years at the time of his passing in 2011.
Born in Providence, Mary Lou was the daughter of the late Walter E. and Lovell A. (Haines) Alsfeld. She was brought up in the Washington Park and Edgewood neighborhoods and attended Broad St. School, Norwood Avenue School, and graduated from Cranston High School in 1953. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Bryant College.
Mary Lou was a stay-at-home mom for many years, and did the bookkeeping for the family business, Ray’s Automotive Company, Pawtucket, and the original Action Autoparts (she came up with the name!) in Seekonk. She later worked for Metropolitan Insurance Company for 25 years and retired in 2002.
She loved spending time with her family and her favorite past times were reading and knitting.
She is survived by her children, Joseph J. O’Neill, Jr. of Warwick, James W. O’Neill and his wife Daryl (Davis) of Monmouth OR, and Nancy P. Oliveira and her partner Nicholas Tella of Warwick; her grandson, Christopher L. Oliveira of Warwick; her brother, Richard W. Alsfeld and his wife Sigrid of Pomfret CT and his children, Patricia E. McCarthy (late Bobby), Richard W. Alsfeld, Jr. (Susan), and Kristin L. Waterman (Robert). She was the sister-in-law of the late Major Peter J. & Frances D. O’Connell, and former sister-in-law of Elaine M. Alsfeld. She also leaves many cousins including Elizabeth (Alsfeld) Kenny of East Greenwich.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 9am in the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Peter Church, Fair St., Warwick. She will be laid to rest with her husband in Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd., Providence. Her visitation will be held Monday 4-7pm.
