For the first time in more than a decade, the Phillips Memorial Baptist Church Holiday Bazaar had new co-chairs. Linda Liebirch and Sarah Fresch took the reins from Diane Steele. The three women are Cranston residents and members of the Phillips congregation.
The annual bazaar, which has been the largest all-congregation event for decades, is an opportunity to not only support the needs of the church but also help organizations and causes across the community. From food baskets to supporting hospice and dementia care programs, proceeds from the event are about giving back to the community too.
The church’s multidenominational knitting club had a prime location in the middle of the festivities. The club, which meets on Tuesday, works year-round to stock their tables with blankets, socks, hats, mittens and other wares.
“We love it,” said Barbara Hopkins of Cranston, when asked about the time and effort to knit. “Everyone pitches in.” When not preparing for the annual holiday event they are knitting to support local dolls for dementia programs.
“Tomorrow,” said Rev. Dr. Amy Chilton, with a laugh when asked when planning begins for next year’s holiday bazaar. Next year Phillips Memorial will also mark its 125th Anniversary, among other milestones.
