Classical edges Pilgrim in 2-1 shootout thriller

The No. 5 Classical field hockey team won a 2-1 thriller over No. 4 Pilgrim last week in the Division II Quarterfinals.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Pats would rebound when Emily Newton scored on a Samantha Moffat pass to make it 1-1 and send the game into overtime.

After two 10-minute overtime periods, the clubs would head to a shootout. It was not until the third round of the shootout that the Purple would get the game winner to send them to the semifinals.

“It was a lot, it was physically exhausting, mentally exhausting, emotionally. It was a lot. I am so proud of how hard they fought to tie the game then to keep going. It was a very physical game, there were penalty minutes. At every turn, they worked so hard. We told them, ‘you just didn’t get a lucky break.’ Sometimes that happens, even when you work so hard you don’t get the victory,” said Pilgrim coach Stephanie Shields.

Pilgrim goalie Colby Lavoie had another stellar outing to cap off her high school career. Lavoie has been a three-tear starter in the cage for the Pats and emerged as one of the state’s top goalies this fall.

“She did great. Shootouts only happen in the playoffs, so she never had an opportunity to experience it in a game. We practiced it once we knew we were in the playoffs, we spent a lot of time working on it. It’s different once you actually get into a game, though,” said Shields.

The Pats will now flip the page toward the 2023 fall. Pilgrim is set to graduate seven senior starters.

“It’s going to be a lot, especially since a few of them were three-year starters. Colby, (Elizabeth) Cavanagh, (Mary) Centracchio, (Ava) Schobel. Those are big shoes to fill, but our young girls are up to the task to work hard,” said Shields.

Pilgrim finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and returned to the postseason after a down 2021. Shields hopes that this year’s success will help the younger players carry some momentum into next year.

“It was very important, it was good. Our goal at the start of every season is to make it to the playoffs because anything can happen once you’re there. It’s a whole new season,” said Shields. “It was a good thing for our girls to see that this is what we work for. It’s exciting, it’s tense and it’s something to be proud of.”
