Pats fall to Mt. Hope in return

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Pilgrim boys soccer team dropped a home matchup against surging Mt. Hope 2-1 on Monday afternoon at home.

It was the Pats’ first game since returning from their two-week layoff due to the coronavirus quarantine. Despite playing a solid first half, Mt. Hope would pull away in the second and control the tempo to wrap up the win. Paulo Frias continued to shine this season for the Pats, scoring the team’s lone goal and further cementing his place as the team’s top offensive weapon.

Pilgrim coach Bill Carroll was not disappointed in his team’s performance considering the scheduling woes it has had to face this season, and felt that the overall difference came at the midfield down the stretch.

“Given that we were not able to practice for two weeks I can’t (criticize) them too much. We almost expected it. I thought we started out well but faded, that was to be expected, but once we faded they took control of the midfield and we weren’t a match for their midfield,” said Carroll.

Carroll was also pleased with Frias, who has enjoyed a breakout year and kept the Pilgrim offense afloat in multiple matchups.

“He’s the go-to guy. He has scored a few goals already which is what we expected from him. He’s a player. The problem is that we need to get more chances to him. He’s a bit isolated up there so we need to get people near him and working with him. He’s doing well for us, we need to get him more opportunities and bring him into the game a little more,” said Carroll.

The loss dropped the Pats to 1-3 on the season. Pilgrim will now have three games in the next week, including a rivalry matchup against Toll Gate on Saturday afternoon.

Carroll hopes to see his team find a little more consistency in the next two weeks and build momentum as it makes its playoff push.

“It’s been different every game for our team, I never know what I’m going to get. One game we will show up and be brilliant, then the next day anyone can beat us. You never know, but I can’t go too nuts on them considering it all, including the two-week layoff,” said Carroll. “Now we have three games coming up in the next week, we need to do some cramming. We’re playing though, which is good, I’m happy about it. The kids are getting some quality playing time. It’s better than not having a season.”
