Burr leads Pats to playoff win

The Pilgrim girls basketball team grinded out a 33-27 win over visiting Davies in the Division III Prelims last week to advance to tonight’s quarters.

The Pats were led by junior Kelsey Burr, who paced the team with a game-high 13 points. Burr would hit a late 3-pointer and key free throws in the final minutes to help the Lady Pats pull away with the win after trailing 14-12 at halftime.

“Tonight, I was just amped up. We played well as a team, we passed the ball around, I passed it to them and they passed it back to me and I just kept putting up shots. I’m excited, not just for myself but for my team, I’m happy to be able to help in anyway I can,” said Burr.

“All year we have been rotating a ton of girls. That is our team concept, they shut down Nadine (Ogni), and then we went to the next girl, and tonight that was Kelsey. She earned it, she works hard and comes to every practice. Practice makes perfect,” said Pilgrim coach Scott Bayha.

Ogni finished with six points while Sara Langevin added five. Hannah French chipped in four points, including two big free throws in the final minute for the dagger.

Keeara Howard led Davies with eight points scored.

Despite the slow first half, Bayha was proud of his team’s effort in the second and felt that Burr’s performance helped jumpstart the run.

“They put a box on Nadine, they knew that we relied on Nadine a lot. they had that diamond defense, Kelsey started hitting those corner shots which really opened up the inside for us. Her hitting those shots was huge for us, they have those tall girls in the middle, we weren’t getting any shots over them. She was what we needed,” said Bayha.

Nerves also contributed to the quiet first half, according to Burr.

“In the first half we were a little nervous because it was our first playoff game. At half time we just needed to take a deep breath and regroup,” said Burr.

The Pats will now head north to take on North Smithfield in the quarterfinals tonight. Bayha and company are confident heading into the matchup and expect a different type of contest. North Smithfield topped Pilgrim 44-41 in their meeting earlier this season.

“I feel pretty confident that we are going to be able to compete with them, the place is going to be packed,” said Bayha. “They are the exact opposite team that we just played. They shoot well from the outside, they play well down low. They are big, but not quite as big, but they have great outside shooters.”
