Pilgrim girls lax falls to West

The Cranston West girls lacrosse team rolled to a 15-3 win over visiting Pilgrim last week as it was led by standouts Aria Lee and Braelyn King. Lee led the way with seven goals while King added six to propel the Falcons to their largest win of the season.

West would jump out to a 4-1 lead in the opening 11 minutes of play and never looked back, cruising to a 6-2 advantage at halftime and rolling throughout the second half.

Despite getting goals from Mary Centracchio and Keira Ramsden, as well as a strong first-half defensive effort, Lee and King continued to find one another as the game wore on.

“We usually like to set tempo first and play it out from there. It was tough setting the tempo early in the game since we were being face guarded, so we had to work around each other and use each other on give and go’s and picks,” said Lee. “We play on the same club team so we use a lot of the same tactics.”

King added: “We’ve played together for awhile, even before high school, so that definitely helps with the chemistry that we have. We go into the game hoping that it works. Give and go’s were our thing today. We’ve played a lot of these teams for three years now so they have kind of figured us out, but we still make it work.”

Sarah Perreault and Emily Abendroth would score in the opening two minutes of the second half as well for West.

The Falcons improved to 3-2 on the season with the win after being in a few close battles. The previous three contests were decided by one point and West went 1-2 in that span, so breaking things open last week was a relief.

“I think we needed this win because it was our first game back with everyone, we haven’t had everyone back and I think we had a lot of motivation,” said Lee, who along with the other seniors, feel a sense of urgency to return to the playoffs and make a championship push. “I’m a senior, we have nine seniors, so I think this year is very important for us. Especially since only three of us will be playing after high school, so we want to make the most of it.”

King, a junior, is looking forward to contributing the rest of the season and also hopes to send the senior class off with a title.

“We have a lot of potential this year. We will be losing nine seniors and only have five juniors, so after this year, we will be rebuilding. So, hopefully this year goes our way,” said King.
