Lincoln School ends Pilgrim’s Cinderella run

By ALEX SPONSELLER The Pilgrim girls tennis team fell to Lincoln School 4-0 in the Division III Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

The Lady Pats shocked the state by upsetting No. 2 St. Ray’s in the first round and then working past Central in the semis.

Although they were unable to walk out on top, they were excited to pull off a couple upsets and prove themselves worthy on competing for a title. It was their first championship appearance since 1998.

“I think it would be an understatement to say that we were thrilled to make it to the championship. We’ve been in every match this season other than the (regular season) match against Lincoln School,” said Pilgrim coach Dan Robinson. “To make it this far, to upset St. Ray’s then turn around and beat Central. It was a fantastic run. Especially considering for most of the season we didn’t have a full team. They battled through adversity and made a deep run into the playoffs, they did fantastic this year.”

After falling to St. Ray’s 5-2 in the season opener, the Pats would pull away with a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals shake up the seedings.

Grace Schenck picked up a 7-5, 6-0 win at third singles for Pilgrim against the Saints. Pilgrim would sweep the doubles matches to complete the win.

Jenna Lucia and Maia Flynn won at first doubles 7-5, 6-4 while Madison Boscia and Berdinie Delias won at second doubles. Amelia Potter and Sara Rega took home the match-winning victory at third doubles to send the team to the semifinals.

“We lost to Saint Ray’s 5-2 in the first match of the season but the girls felt like they could have won that match and wanted to prove it. They came out and were probably as determined as they were all year. We lost to Central 4-3 in the regular season but were missing a few girls. They really wanted to prove that it wasn’t a fluke that they made it to the championship. They had something to prove all year,” said Robinson.

Pilgrim is set to return a handful of starters next fall and will be relying on some young girls to step up and make an impact. Robinson believes that this year’s run will only help moving forward.

“The biggest thing that they can take away from this run is that tennis matches can be decided by one point here, one point there. You can’t get too high, you can’t get too low,” said Robinson. “It’s about how you handle those peaks and valleys and they experienced that this year.”
