Pilgrim softball wins appeal of Coventry infraction

On Monday evening, the defending state champion Coventry Oakers softball team edged visiting Pilgrim 1-0 to advance to the semifinals and drop the Pats to the losers bracket.

Shortly after the conclusion of the game, however, the Providence Journal first reported that the Pilgrim team appealed the result to the Rhode Island Interscholastic League due to an illegal lineup substitution on the Coventry side.

Pilgrim would go on to win its appeal the following day, erasing the Coventry victory and forcing the teams to rewind the clock and resume the contest where the infraction occurred. Coventry was originally set to take on Cranston West on Wednesday evening while Pilgrim was supposed to travel to Bay View Academy on Tuesday, but instead, the Pats and Oakers will meet at Coventry on Thursday afternoon to finish.

The game will pick up in the fourth inning, with Coventry leading 1-0. The winner will go on to face Cranston West while the loser will drop to the losers bracket to face the Bengals. Those dates have yet to be established, but Friday remains the most likely date for each contest.

As for the state finals, the league has yet to announce the schedule. The first game was slated for Saturday afternoon at Rhode Island College, with another game on Sunday if necessary due to the double elimination format.
