In what police are calling “a horrible accident,” Gregory McLaughlin, 80 of West Warwick was killed by his own car on Saturday, March 13 at about 8 a.m.

Police responded to a parking area at 31 Universal Blvd. Near Smokey Bones to find Mr. McLaughlin lying unresponsive in the lot with his stopped car a short distance away. According to Captain Joel Thomas, the car was in gear and the motor wasn’t running. The ignition was on. He said there were tire and scuff marks at the scene.

Mr. McLaughlin was transported by Warwick Rescue to Kent Hospital in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital and was pronounced dead.

According to the police report, it appears Mr. McLaughlin was struck by his own car. Cpt. Thomas said it is possible that Mr. McLaughlin sustained a medical episode, however the exact cause of death will be determined by the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s Office. Neither foul play nor suicide is suspected at this time.

Any person with information related to this incident is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at (401) 468-4344.
