BREAKING &  ENTERING

On July 11, a Breaking & Entering was discovered at the Sherman School located at 120 Killey Ave. in Warwick.

According to Warwick Police, “entry was gained to the school which is currently under construction and new damage throughout the interior was noted. A review of surveillance cameras captured numerous individuals inside the school during the early morning hours on the same date. The surveillance photographs were posted to the Warwick Police Department Facebook page for assistance in identifying the suspects.”

Subsequent identification and questioning of the suspects led to the arrests of the following individuals:

Justin Melgar, 18, of Cranston, was charged with breaking & entering and vandalism.

Mynor Colindres, 18, of Providence, was charged with breaking & entering and vandalism.

Jonathan Brito, 19, of Providence, was charged with breaking & entering and vandalism.

Jesus Cortes, 21, of Providence, was charged with breaking & entering and vandalism.

Jennifer Jaworski, 19, of Providence, was charged with breaking & entering.

Victoria Castro, 20, of Providence, was charged with breaking & entering.

The weeklong investigation was handled by Warwick Police Sgt. Christopher Lo and Detectives Ted Bulis, Melissa Marano and Randy Bell, in cooperation with the Warwick School Department.

There haven’t been students learning inside Sherman Elementary since September after mold was discovered in the building. According to Steve Gothberg, Warwick Public Schools Director of Capital and Construction Projects, there was substantial damage done with seven or eight fire alarms activated. Gothberg could not provide a damage estimate by the time of publication.


CATALYTIC
CONVERTER THEFT

At 4:30 p.m., July 3, Warwick Police were dispatched to the Sonesta Suites at 500 Kilvert St. for the report of a stolen catalytic converter. The victim had parked his vehicle in the hotel parking lot around 10 p.m. the previous night.

The next day, he started his vehicle, noticed a strange noise, and then realized the catalytic converter was missing from underneath the vehicle. The victim also told police that he found a set of keys beside his car and that he gave the keys to a maintenance worker at the hotel. The victim would like to press charges if a suspect is identified.

Around 10:22 p.m., July 3, Warwick Police were dispatched to the lobby of Warwick Police Headquarters to talk to the victim of a catalytic converter theft. The victim told police that her vehicle was parked in the Kohl’s parking lot at the Rhode Island Mall (600 Bald Hill Road) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The victim returned to her vehicle around 2 p.m. and heard a loud noise coming from the exhaust when she startd her vehicle.

“Believing that it was an issue with her muffler, she drove the vehicle home to her residence in West Warwick,” Warwick Police Officer Paris L. Norwood wrote in the incident report. “She then called her nephew, who responded and advised her that there was an issue with the vehicle’s exhaust. Upon his checking underneath the vehicle, he observed that the catalytic converter was missing. The victim would like to press charges if a suspect is identified.


DISORDERLY
CONDUCT

At 11:39 p.m. on July 17, Cranston Police arrested John Duffy, 58, of 53 Port Circle, Warwick, on charges of Disorderly Conduct (one count). The arrest was the result of a disturbance at the St. Mary’s Feast Society (15 Phenix Ave.). Duffy was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace and released, according to Cranston Police.

 


DUI

At 12:07 a.m., Sunday, July 17, Rhode Island State Troopers arrested Michael F. Sabitoni, 55, of 22 Peppermint Lane, Johnston, for Driving Under the Influence of an Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs (first offense, BAC unknown) and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, according to Rhode Island State Police.

The arrest was the result of a motor vehicle stop on Route 6, in the town of Johnston.

Sabitoni is a prominent labor leader in the state. He was vocal in his support for the Amazon warehouse project in Johnston (and the hiring of union labor to construct the mega-facility).

Michael F. Sabitoni, serves as President of the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council (RIBCTC). Sabitoni has volunteered with numerous town projects and organizations.

Johnston Mayor Joseph M. Polisena had words of support Tuesday for Sabitoni following his arrest.

“Obviously it was a mistake,” Polisena said. “Mike is a great guy. He’s done a lot for the town of Johnston, and youth sports.”

Sabitoni was allegedly driving 81 mph in a 55 mph zone when he was stopped by State Police, according to published R.I. Traffic Tribunal Records.

Sabitoni was transported to Rhode Island State Police Headquarters where he was processed, arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and released into the custody of a responsible adult, according to RISP spokesperson Maj. Laurie Ludovici.

 


MURDER

Colonel Darnell S. Weaver, RISP Superintendent and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announced an arrest in the investigation at 561 South County Trail, Exeter, according to a RISP press release.

Ramsundar Ramkalawan, 60, of 561 South County Trail, Exeter, was arrested and charged with Murder.

At approximately 10:10 a.m., Monday, July 18, State Police received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive female at the apartment located at 561 South County Trail in Exeter. Troopers and Exeter Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on scene and determined the female was deceased and the death was deemed suspicious, according to RISP. The State Police Detective Bureau responded and investigated.

The victim is identified was Donna MacDonald, 65, of 561 South County Trail, Exeter.

Ramsundar Ramkalawan was held overnight at State Police Headquarters and was arraigned the next morning at the Washington County Courthouse in Wakefield.
