CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT

Around 10:20 a.m., Aug. 3, Warwick Police responded to Jamestown Apartments, 1809 Warwick Ave., for the report of a stolen catalytic converter.

The victim told police that his daughter lives at the building and he had spent the night, with this vehicle, A 2009 Honda CRV, parked in the lot since approximately 6 p.m. the night before. When he left to go home around 7 a.m., he realized something was wrong.

“However he called AAA first thinking maybe they could fix it,” Warwick Police Officer Stephanie R. Pabis wrote in the incident report. “When AAA arrived on scene they advised him it was actually a stolen catalytic converter and not another issue.”

The victim told police that a new catalytic converter would cost around $600.

The victim said that if a suspect was found he would like to press charges. The report was forwarded to Warwick Police Department’s Detectives Unit for further investigation.

DUI

Around 10:55 p.m., Aug. 11, Warwick Police Officer Evan P. Brown responded to Navigant Credit Union, 2100 Warwick Ave., for the report of a motor vehicle crash. Several other officers were already on the scene.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash, a 2017 Toyota RAV4, had heavy front-end damage. Brown spoke to the driver, later identified as Jamie L. Bedford, 41, of 111 Harper Ave., Cranston.

Bedford was standing on the passenger’s side of her vehicle with the door open, talking on her cell phone and crying, according to the arrest report.

She told police she was not injured.

The driver of the other vehicle told police “she believed that Bedford was possibly intoxicated,” Brown wrote in the report.

“While speaking with Bedford, I noticed that her speech was slurred and thick-tongued,” Brown wrote. “I observed her eyes to be moderately bloodshot and glossy. I detected the moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from Bedford’s breath.”

Brown asked Bedford if she had been drinking. She said she had not.

Bedford consented to a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

Following the tests, Bedford was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown) and issued citations for Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense) and Failure to yield Entering from Private Drive or Road. She was later released from Warwick Police Headquarters to a sober adult.

DUI

Around 4:40 p.m., Aug. 14, Warwick Police Officer Keara M. Enos was on a stationary traffic post on Veterans Memorial Drive, near the Jefferson Boulevard Rotary.

“My attention was drawn towards the  rotary when I heard the sound of tires screeching, and vehicles sounding their horns in that area,” Enos wrote in the arrest report. “I then observed a white 2015 Mercedes ML 350 … traveling the wrong way into oncoming traffic.”

The vehicle was allegedly traveling westbound in the eastbound rotary at a high rate of speed, according to police.

“It should be noted that traffic flow in the area at the time was heavy and as the Mercedes was doing this, other vehicles in the eastbound lane had to swerve out of the way for safety,” Enos wrote.

Enos initiated a traffic stop.

“Rather than slow down or stop, the Mercedes appeared to accelerate, as the gap between my cruiser and the Mercedes was increasing as we traveled west,” Enos wrote.

The vehicle eventually pulled into the driveway of the Warwick Fire Department Station 1, where it came to a stop.

Police made contact with the driver and identified her as Eileen F. Daniel, 59, of 82 Rome Ave., Providence.

“Her appearance was disheveled, her hair was out of place, and she had makeup smudged around her face,” Enos wrote. “Daniel attempted to speak to me at first through the closed window. I indicated for her to roll the front driver’s side window down, however, she rolled down the rear driver’s side window instead. She then rolled down the appropriate window, and began to apologize.”

Enos said that she could detect the odor of alcohol emanating from the driver’s breath. Daniel allegedly admitted to drinking “two glasses of Chardonnay.”

Daniel consented to a series of Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.

Following the tests, Daniel was arrested and charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense) and issued citations for Refusal to Submit to a Preliminary Breath Test, Driving the Wrong Way on a One-Way Highway, Crossing Center Section of Divided Highway and Obedience to Traffic Control Devices.
