DUI
On Feb. 1 at 1:02 a.m., a Warwick police officer saw a vehicle driving 55 mph in a 35-mph zone on Post Road. After seeing the driver struggle to maintain his lane, the officer started following the vehicle, eventually executing a traffic stop.
The driver, 34-year-old Pierre Benoit of Cranston, told the officer he was leaving work, although he was unable to tell the officer why he was speeding and why he struggled to maintain his lane. Reportedly, the officer found a carton of boxed wine on the floor of the passenger’s side of the car, and Benoit had bloodshot eyes, a red face and smelled of alcohol.
The officer attempted to conduct a field sobriety test; however, Benoit refused, saying that he would not take any tests. After refusing a second time, as well as refusing a breath test, Benoit was arrested and charged with suspicion of DUI and refusing to submit to a chemical breath test.
DRIVING WITHOUT LICENSE/SHOPLIFTING
On Feb. 1 at 5:38 p.m., a Warwick police officer saw a car driving on Bald Hill Road with its driver not wearing a seat belt and pulled the vehicle over.
The driver of the car, 26-year-old Nicholas Santos of West Warwick, was found to be driving with a suspended license. It was Santos’ second offense; as such, he was issued a court summons for both that and for driving without a seatbelt, though he was not arrested at the scene.
One of the car’s passengers, 45-year-old William DeSantis of Coventry, had been wanted for shoplifting from an incident that occurred at the Lowe’s on Quaker Lane on Dec. 17. Reportedly, DeSantis was a repeat offender, and had stolen items valued at $438 before leaving the store. DeSantis was arrested and charged with shoplifting.
NO TRESPASS ISSUED
On Feb. 3 at 1:26 p.m., WPD officers arrived at the McDonald’s on Bald Hill Road for a report of an unruly customer.
While they were at the scene, a McDonald’s employee reportedly told the officers that for the past two and a half years, a man had claimed that his food had been made incorrectly and demanded new food for free. She pointed out the man to the officers, who eventually identified him as Joseph Delsignore, 55, of Cranston.
Delsignore was initially confrontational, with officers noting that he refused to provide identifying information, and began recording the confrontation. Upon being threatened with arrest for obstruction, Delsignore gave his name and date of birth to the officer.
Delsignore stated that he understood the terms of the no-trespass order the officers issued, and left the scene without further incident.
