Virtual public meetings end this Friday, but streaming to stay

The days of public Zoom and teleconferencing meetings is coming to an end, although the city will continue to live stream meetings.

In a notice issued Wednesday to the city, Stacy DiCola, associate director of public information with the Secretary of State, said Executive Order 21-27 expires this Friday and virtual and teleconference meeting “will no longer be allowed. Public bodies must return to meeting in-person in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.”

On Tuesday Mayor Frank Picozzi said he was prepared to eliminate the virtual meetings should the state allow for hybrid meetings. He reasoned conducting both in-person and virtual meetings would be a strain on the city’s IT department apart from the confusion of taking comment virtually as well as in person. On Monday the full council returned to meeting in Council Chambers and public comment was taken both virtually and from those attending the meeting.
