The Special Commission on Reapportionment will meet Thursday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in the student center of the Community College of Rhode Island, Knight Campus, 400 East Avenue. in Warwick. This meeting will be the fifth of six that have been scheduled at various sites around the state to gain the input of Rhode Islanders on the redistricting process. The state constitution calls for the General Assembly to reapportion its districts as well as the two congressional districts after each 10-year federal census. In addition to an overview of the redistricting process, statewide census data and legislative seat distribution, the commission is expected to hear an in-depth review of census data for Kent County. There will also be a demonstration of the www.riredistricting.org website. CCRI requires all those coming to campus to show proof of full vaccination or proof of a negative test within 72 hours of coming to campus. Individuals can provide a vaccine card or a photo of the card, plus some form of ID. For those who arrive to campus with neither proof of full vaccination or negative test, CCRI will provide on-site rapid testing. Masks must be worn at all times on campus, except when eating or drinking. The commission is chaired by Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland) and Sen. Stephen R. Archambault (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston). All meetings will air live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15 and 61, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. The meetings will also be live streamed at www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
