RI Philharmonic Orchestra's 'Fireside Serenades' to feature Latina women of contemporary music

On Saturday, Feb. 20, Lina Gonzalez-Granados takes The Vets podium to conduct great music from the past and present.

Grieg’s exquisite “Holberg Suite” will be showcased along with rising composer Caroline Shaw’s “Entr’acte” and Gabriela Lena Frank’s mesmerizing “Leyandas: An Andean Walkabout.”

“The Rhode Island Philharmonic’s commitment to prioritize diversity in both repertoire and performers continues with this great concert, featuring Grieg’s tender ‘Holberg Suite’ and contemporary compositions performed by our Philharmonic Orchestra musicians under the leadership of world-renowned conductor Lina Gonzalez-Granados,” said Executive Director David Beauchesne. “Born and raised in Cali, Colombia, Ms. Gonzalez-Granados is an avid proponent of the inclusion and development of new orchestra works from Latin-American composers, and will bring her singular insight to this event.”

Included in the Washington Post’s list of most significant women composers in history, California-born Gabriela Lena Frank’s heritage has been at the core of her musical journey, a 20-year exploration of what it means to be an American with a Lithuanian father and a Peruvian/Chinese mother. He describes her “Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout” as inspired by “the idea of ‘mestizaje’ as envisioned by Peruvian writer Jose Maria Arguedas, where cultures can coexist without the subjugation of one by the other. As such, this piece mixes elements from the western classical and Andean folk music traditions.”

The concert will be presented at 5 p.m. (in-person attendance is limited to subscribers only) and again at 8 p.m. (subscriber in-person attendance

and livestream for subscribers and single-ticket buyers) at The Vets.

The 8 p.m. performance is available to the public via livestream. If you are interested in viewing this concert live at home, call 401-248-7000 or visit StreamRIPhil.org to explore purchase options. A single-ticket purchase option is available at $40 per household.

The Vets is located at One Avenue of the Arts in Providence.
