Knights fall to Thunder Wolves

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball team headed to Batavia, NY to take on the No. 5 nationally ranked (NJCA DII Poll) Niagara County Community College Thunder Wolves in the GCC Cougar Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon. CCRI led by one point at halftime but Niagara pulled away in the second half to win the game 78-60. The loss drops CCRI’s season record to 7-4 overall.

The Knights were aiming to bounce back from a close loss to Genesee Community College the day before and end the GCC Cougar Holiday Classic on a high note. This would be no easy task the No. 5 NJCAA DII team stood in their way in the form of the Niagara Thunder Wolves.

The game started as a stalemate as neither team could pull away. Points were scares as both teams shot below 30 percent from the floor and the scoring leader after 20 minutes scored a mere five points. Freshman Tyreek Davis (Torrington, CT) and sophomore co-captain Jeremy Remigio (Providence) both tallied five first half points. Freshman Mitchel Noresca (East Providence) ripped down an impressive seven first half rebounds while chipping in four points. At halftime CCRI held a slim lead, 24-23 over Niagara.

In the second half the Thunder Wolves came to life with CCRI not able to find an answer and pulled away, outscoring the Knights by 19 points in the last 20 minutes. The final score read Niagara 78, CCRI 60.

CCRI was led offensively by freshman Reece Bullock (Coventry), scoring 11 points and added seven rebounds. Noresca tallied 10 rebounds with eight points and was named to the All-Tournament Team for his performances over the weekend. Remigio contributed seven points, three rebounds and one steal.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented, “The young men played well for three half’s this weekend. We competed at a high level and gained a lot from the tournament. We were not able to finish how we would have liked but this weekend experience will prove very valuable to us down the road. Our young group took major steps growing up this weekend and looking forward to what is in store for us moving forward.”

The CCRI Knights men’s basketball will next be in action on Tuesday, Dec. 10th at 7:30 p.m. as they host Navy Prep.
