The No. 3 Warwick co-op boys tennis team fell in a wild semifinal match to No. 2 Cranston East, as the Bolts earned the 4-3 win and a spot in the Division III finals against Providence Country Day.

All four singles matches went three sets on Tuesday, which forced the final doubles battle to be played on Wednesday afternoon due to darkness.

Parker Weldy won his second singles match 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and John Maynard won at fourth singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Will King and Alex Marsis took home a win at second doubles, 6-4, 6-4.

East’s Eri Ogunde topped Warwick’s Cornelius Zmed at top singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Jason Barrera edged Warwick’s Josh Maynard 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 at third singles.

East’s top doubles pair of Johan Nawrocki and Ansony Luis topped Warwick’s Jacob Scott and Etienne Degos 6-2, 6-2. East’s third doubles team of Joestin Lin and Leonardo Lopez beat Warwick’s Avery Marques and Alex Mihalos 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the deciding match.

SOFTBALL

Pilgrim 2, Smithfield 1

The Pilgrim softball team pulled off a dramatic comeback win against Smithfield in the opening round of the Division I playoffs on Tuesday, using a seventh-inning rally to win 2-1.

The Sentinels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and entered the final inning still up by one. Genna D’Amato played the hero in the final inning as she hit a walk-off triple, scoring Madison Tuirok and Kaelyn Shea for the win.

D’Amato had three of Pilgrim’s four hits. Pitcher Gretchen Dombeck got the win in the circle for Pilgrim, tossing a complete game and finishing with five strikeouts and allowing one run.

BASEBALL

Hendricken 2, Smithfield 0

The Hawks edged the Sentinels in the opening round of the Division I playoffs on Tuesday.

The teams were scoreless until the fifth inning, and Braeden Campbell would drive in a run while Cullen Crain reached home on an error. The two runs would be enough as Hendricken’s Dylan Poloski was dominant, tossing a complete game gem and striking out seven batters and allowing just three hits and no runs.

West Warwick 6, Toll Gate 0

The Titans fell to the Wizards in the Division II preliminary round last weekend.

Greg Laliberte tossed 3 1/3 innings on the mound for Toll Gate and struck out five batters. West Warwick scored five runs in the second inning to take control early to oust Toll Gate.

Toll Gate finishes the season at 5-17 overall.
