Rourke, Colon endorsed by progessive group Run for Something

Run for Something (RFS), a progressive political organization, has endorsed Warwick progressive candidates Jennifer Rourke over the incumbent State Senate Majority leader for District 29 and Zach Colon for the Ward 9 Council seat.

Rourke is challenging incumbent Senate Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey in the Sept. 8 primary. If she wins, she would face Republican Jean Trafford in the Nov. 3 general election.

“I am honored to receive the endorsement from a group of fellow progressives that believe that together we can make significant change to those that represent us and give a voice to the regular everyday person by supporting down ballot races,” Rourke said in a release.

Rourke’s platform includes raising the minimum wage to $15, a single-payer healthcare system, gun control and investing in renewable energy. She is also a supporter of veterans’, women’s, LGBTQ and disability rights.

Colon is running against Vincent Gebhart in the Democratic primary in September. If Colon wins, he will compete in a four-way race in November against Republican Armand Lusi and independents Aaron Mackisey and Sean Henry.

“As someone running to be the youngest city councilor in the history of Warwick, I am honored to be endorsed by Run for Something, an organization that understands the value of having fresh and progressive perspectives in elected positions across the country from school boards to Congress,” Colon said. “Our campaign has been working hard every day since launching last September and our message is resonating with community members more and more every day.”

Colon’s platform includes increasing funding for schools, investing in renewable energy, enacting term limits for Warwick’s elected officials and creating more affordable housing opportunities.

“RFS endorses candidates on two major criteria: heart and hustle. That’s what defines viability to us,” RFS co-founder Ross Morales Rocketto said.  “These are candidates who are going to work hard to run grassroots, community-led campaigns. We are a critical time in history and the momentum these candidates generate will have a lasting impact for years to come.”

According to RFS, the organization has endorsed 521 campaigns in 47 states and Washington D.C. during the 2020 election cycle. 62 percent of endorsed candidates identified as Black, indigenous or people of color (BIPOC), 24 percent as LGBTQ and 62 percent as women. The RFS has endorsed 1,439 campaigns in its history, and 310 of these candidates have been elected.
